About Lightpoint

Lightpoint serves the global reconstruction community with cutting-edge data and education to elevate their analyses. We empower private collision reconstructionists (hired by government agencies, municipalities, attorneys, and insurance companies) and public reconstructionists (who are dedicated law enforcement officers), to uncover the truth behind collisions with accuracy and efficiency.

Our work isn't just technical; it's transformative. By providing accurate data, we help injured individuals access the information they need to obtain justice and heal, enable overworked law enforcement professionals to complete investigations more accurately and swiftly, equip juries with clear visual evidence for informed decisions, and bring closure to families who have lost loved ones. At Lightpoint, your contributions extend beyond the screen, they give back to local neighborhoods, national safety networks, and global communities, turning data into real-world healing and justice.

About the Role

As a 3D Modeler at Lightpoint Scientific, you'll play a pivotal role in our mission to deliver unparalleled accuracy in collision reconstruction. This isn't mundane design work; it's scientific artistry that directly impacts lives. You'll transform laser-scan data of exemplar vehicles into low-poly 3D meshes, ensuring every model is a flawless match to the data for use in high-stakes simulations and analyses. Collaborating closely with our 3D technical artist, you'll leverage emerging tools and automations to streamline processes while managing a growing library of digital assets. With a database of over 1,450 laser scanned vehicles (and growing), you'll be at the heart of scaling our impact, creating resources that empower reconstructionists worldwide to serve their communities more effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Create accurate, low-poly (~40,000 polygons) 3D meshes of exemplar vehicles from foundational laser scan cloud data (provided as E57 or PTS files), ensuring a perfect match for scientific analysis and simulations.
  • Package meshes with comprehensive measurement datasheets to support reconstructionists in their critical work.
  • Manage and organize the digital contents library, maintaining high standards for accessibility and version control.
  • Produce high-quality renders for showcasing models, enhancing educational materials, and customer presentations.
  • Collaborate directly with the 3D technical artist to test and refine tools and automations that accelerate mesh creation, contributing to efficiency gains.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of combined experience in 3D modeling and/or 3D sculpting; 2-3 years of experience in 3D modeling for vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Proven previous experience converting point clouds to 3D meshes, with a portfolio showcasing low-poly models.
  • Familiarity with E57 file formats.
  • Ability to deliver high-precision work under strict time constraints, with strong attention to detail for scientific accuracy. Ideally, models will be built in 3 days or fewer, once the process is finalized.
  • Comfortable with initial 1-week onsite training in Westlake Village, CA, followed by fully remote work.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with technical teams and stakeholders.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Proficiency in Blender and CloudCompare is preferred to align with our established workflows; however, we're open to alternative tools or methods that enable efficient, timely results.
  • Experience in automotive or forensic modeling.
  • Background in scientific visualization or simulation environments.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary range of $70,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) with matching contributions up to 5%.
  • 2 weeks of paid vacation, plus flexible remote work after initial training.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful difference: your meshes will aid in healing for accident victims, efficiency for law enforcement, clarity for juries, and closure for grieving families, impacting communities at every level.
  • A collaborative, mission-driven culture where innovation meets purpose.

How to Apply

If you're passionate about using your 3D skills to drive real-world impact, we want to hear from you! Please send your resume, portfolio (including examples of low-poly models and any point cloud conversions), and a brief cover letter to Sam at smccool@lightpoint.com.

Top candidates will be invited to complete a paid sample project: Create a low-poly mesh of a vehicle, true to provided point cloud data.

Apply now and help us light the path to justice and scientific analysis.
