We're looking for a skilled Blender artist with a strong creative eye to transform 2D illustrated cityscapes into optimized 3D environments for our interactive web experiences. You'll be the technical bridge between our hand-drawn illustrations and real-time Three.js implementation.
What You'll Do
- Create 3D blockouts and layouts in Blender based on 2D concept sketches
- Interpret and preserve the artistic intent of hand-drawn illustrations - understanding which details matter and why
- Model environments that serve as a foundation for 2D paintover work by our illustrator
- Make creative judgment calls about composition, staging, and visual emphasis
- Refine those 3D models into final assets after illustrator feedback
- Export optimized Blender scenes for Three.js (working closely with our web developer)
- Balance artistic style with web performance constraints
Important: This isn't just technical translation work. It’s important that details, artistic intent and the overall handdrawn 2d feel are preserved when translating to 3D. We need someone who has a feel and understanding of the aesthetic in the 2D art and can carry that creative thinking and feel into the 3D space.
Requirements
- Strong Blender modeling skills - environment/prop modeling experience required
- Understanding of real-time 3D optimization (poly counts, texture management, LODs)
- Experience exporting to game engines or web (Unity/Unreal/Three.js or similar)
- Can work from rough sketches to create a rough model, then finetune based on more detailed illustrations and iterate based on artistic feedback
- Work-for-hire contract
- Availability mostly overlapping Netherlands timezone (CET) 8am - 5pm (give or take a few hours)
- Organized workflow using Slack/Discord for daily communication
- Portfolio showing both technical 3D work as well as ability to match stylized/painterly aesthetics
Strong Plus
- Three.js export/optimization experience
- Familiarity with anime or illustrated art styles
- Rigging experience
- Previous work where 3D was used as a base for 2D illustration
The Role
This position bridges technical 3D production with artistic illustration. You'll need to be comfortable receiving direction from both a 2D illustrator and a Three.js developer. The ideal candidate can translate artistic vision into optimized 3D geometry, optimized for web and while preserving handdrawn aesthetic.
Timeline
- Q4 2025: Exploration phase (variable hours, part-time)
- Q1-Q2 2026: Ramp up to substantial hours (scope tbd)
- Ongoing from there on: Periodic involvement for new content
