3dcoat weird brush behaviour - Why does Blender feel better for handpainting than 3dcoat?

Hello there, I have a question regarding handpainting. For some reason the brushes in 3dcoat seem to be really choppy, they tend to only target one side when painting on strong edges, sometimes heavily bleeding over when painting inside cavities, even with a small brush.
Meanwhile in blender the paint gets applied really smooth, and it doesnt matter if I'm painting over hard edges or in cavities.
The UV map is clean, I tried exporting my meshes as an fbx with smooth shading, sharpened edges but the brush is always going crazy on edges. Is there something I need to keep in mind when exporting the mesh? Is there a brush setting in 3dcoat that I'm not aware of?

I attached an example below, left is blender, right is 3dcoat:
