I think that the more 1st party a studio is, meaning it is the client and has production inhouse, the better the working conditions.
So far I haven't faced this in video games, but I have seen it in Architechture Visualization

I don't think there is anything industry specific - just people problem. if one guy has all the power, everybody has to deal with his problems.
union is one and probably the best way to balance the power.
the psychotic egomaniacs do actually serve a purpose, it's just problem when they are left unchecked.
all the normal meek people have to form coalitions otherwise they're going to keep getting treated like dirt. It's been that way since we swung from the trees.
The problem is everyone wants to work in the VFX industry.
