The lighting is reacting to the surface of my object in an unexpected way creating extremely harsh lighting jumps from one face to the next.

Issue seems to have been resolved by increasing the Shadow Offset within the Render settings.
i really appreciate that you took the time to share your findings. nothing worse than searching records online for a problem only to find the question without a solution. stuff like this can be pretty thankless.
