Hi all!
This is my new portfolio piece - I'm modelling Noelle, a character from NieR Reincarnation. I adore the Reincarnation concept art and struggled to choose which piece to model, but I find Noelle's outfit really stylish and cool, so ultimately chose her! I'm looking forwards to modelling the spear especially, as I haven't modelled a weapon before.
I'm not doing this for an actual game project, but my goal is to work in the Games Industry, so I'm aiming to have her game ready by the end of this. I also want to explore rigging her myself rather than using Mixamo.
Here is the concept art I am working from:
I've gotten the body sculpt to the point I'm pretty happy with it. I haven't done 'anime' anatomy before, so the legs being so long feels pretty weird to me!
Feedback of all kinds is always welcome, and appreciated! (:

Nice concept. Eager to the final design.
Cool concept. The sculpt looks a bit lumpy, I would knock it down a sub div or 2 and smooth it out before going to higher sub divisions. I would also maybe look to thinning down the calves to better match the concept art.
two great suggestions, thank you! I'll give this a shot (:
Update One: Have started throwing some clothes together in Marvelous Designer! Today was very slow as I have never used MD before, so was just trying to get familiar with the tools and how it all works. Went through a rough patch but feeling pretty confident-ish to go forwards and tackle the rest of the clothes!
I thought starting with the bodysuit would be easiest... I was wrong! In hindsight I probably should've started with the gloves. Had to restart a few times but I'm getting to the point I'm decently happy with it - will do the rest of the clothes and then go back in and fix things / add further details.
Also received some great tips about how to improve the body that I'll get to after I do the clothes :D
Yeah, as said the figure is a little lumpy. Mostly though the anatomy isnt right for the character. I reckon you would want to nail that first.
Yeah, I thought I was happy with the anatomy but now that I look at it again, some proportions are definitely off - I think I've subconsciously given her a different body type to the concept. I'm not really a big fan of her being so lanky (I feel like she should have a lot more muscle to her, especially in the arms, being a spearbearer constantly in combat) but! that is not my job as a 3D modeller, I should be aiming to stay true to the concept. So I will go back and fix it. Thank you (:
Might be worth doing a paintover in photoshop to see where you want to make changes in the anatomy. Use liquify to make big proportion changes if needed :)
Update 2: Anatomy Update! Have edited the proportions to match the concept art more closely, and smoothed a lot of areas out to get that ~ smooth anime girl ~ feel. Looking forwards to working on the clothes again and seeing how they fit with the new proportions! Thank you all so much for your help so far :D
Update 3: Made a bit more progress with the clothes! Still struggling to know how to do certain things in Marvelous, spent a while trying to use autofit to get things entirely skin tight (for example the arm covers) but had no luck. Am leaving the trousers to tackle on Monday because I can tell getting the bagging correct will be a challenge, and I'm not sure how to approach them yet!
Update 4: Have had the flu so progress has been very slow, but have chipped away at the clothes! Has taken a few tutorial videos but I'm starting to feel more confident with Marevelous Designer, and feel I now have the knowledge needed to achieve the trousers. Looking forwards to taking a proper shot at them over the next few days!
The brim of the hat and the hat itself is still a bit rough, but I'm thinking it'd be better to clean it up in ZBrush. Still got some work to do on the bodysuit, and need to reshape the arm bands and add a lot more layers and detail. But its coming along!
Woah that GIF is INCREDIBLY helpful, thank you so much for the care you've gone to to help me! I look forwards to revising the body sculpt with these changes in mind :D
Update 5: I've been trying to apply topstitch for some nice details, but have noticed the 'dimensions' of the stitch are changing across the same piece of pattern, and at some bits its straight up deforming (for example the really thick white rectangle stitch by the zip, and in some place it doesn't stick to a straight line, it jumps to the side a bit)
This is all across the same pattern so I'm wondering if anyone knows a) what is causing this and b) how to fix it? (This is in Marvelous Designer)
Been really sick so took a break from the clothing to get the spear HP done! Got a few details still to be added during texturing, but overall its pretty much finished. Yay. Will get back to clothes soon!
Long time no update! Have been busy with other projects and earning money, so hadn't had the time to get back to this for a while. Here's the current status on the character model - she's certainly coming along, hoping to wrap it up pretty soon!
finished knife (:
update ! Got these belts done - has been a few weeks without progress as I was travelling with family, but excited to be back !
The high poly is complete ! :D More than open to any last minute feedback before I move on to the low poly and texturing, its always appreciated!
nearly done !! am keeping this as a concept sculpt for now due to other projects coming up, so am rendering in zbrush at the moment
Hi all! Just wanted to update to say Noelle is finished and now available on ArtStation (: thank you all for your support
