I worked as a freelancer for the major part of my life and then only in a micro company, so this was never a concern to me, but I wonder: does it feel awkward to watch a tutorial if you work in a large company/corpo, in an open space environment? Especially if you're in a senior position? After all they're paying you to know your job.

no.
you never know too much. does it impact your work? as in, is it so distracting that you can't do the job in a timely manner, then yes it might become an issue. otherwise, what company would be against their employees becoming better? would be stupid, no?
Sometimes its even needed to get the work done. Noone can know everything.
if you fly under the radar by getting your work done right and on time nobody is going to pay much attention to what you are doing.
if you cause problems then people question every little thing you do.
3D is still evolving fast. And at one point you have to learn all these new things.
I remember on my first day at work in a AAA studio, I came in and the senior 3d environment artist was watching a standard substance designer tutorial.
It's completely fine to watch tutorials at work. Just make sure you actually are working and it's helping you to complete your task. if you have spare time, sure, learn even more :)
not as awkward as watching 'lassie come home' or 'Buck Rogers in the 25 th century@ ;)
We had a new artist running Game of Thrones fullscreen on their second monitor. "But having a show running in the background helps me focus!" Um no, haha! They got a bit of a talking-to, and so did the rest of the new hire cohort just to be safe.
We've also had artists running non-work-related TV shows in small windows off to the side. They learn pretty quickly though, distractions don't help when you're consistently falling behind.
Work is work, stay focused and get stuff done. Then go home and do whatever you like.
Not at all, this is an admirable trait and there are many people out there who simply say "I don't know how to do it", or worse yet, don't know and won't admit to it, and worst of all are too lazy to bother to self-teach.
Good for you for expanding your knowledge of your own accord!👏
I had this concern as well and talked with my lead about it, he said that watching tutorials or even spending time just learning new stuff during at work is ok, because it is , after all, for the company's benefit too
i always watching tutorials, don't know when it would help solve issue or work better
