3DS Max / Wait time for render

I have an ArchViz project which I modeled in Maya and have imported into 3Ds Max.

The scene has about 4,000 objects and 17 million polygons.

In Maya, when I hit render, everything runs smooth, the render starts up and gets right to work.

In 3DS Max, when I hit render, I get hit with a progress bar which says "initializing renderer" and have to wait about four minutes before it actually starts rendering. Trying the IPR render in Arnold freezes up 3DS Max for a few minutes with even an output image of only 320 x 240 pixels.

So far, I have been able to shave off about 7 seconds by replacing duplicated geometry with instances, but it's my understanding that instances usually don't have much of a performance gain in render time. There are more objects which can be instanced, but I'm not confident right now I'll be able to erase the wait time.

The problem isn't Arnold or my workstation specs (Nvidia 2070 Super and 32 GB of RAM), because it runs fine in Maya.

Is this an inherent limitation of 3Ds Max for a scene of this size?
