Using Zbrush For Highpoly Detail

I'm trying to get into Zbrush for the first time and I'm wanting to sculpt some detail into a wooden gun stock I'm making. I made the shape of the stock in Maya and I've brought it into Zbrush but I can't figure out how to smooth it so I can start sculpting details in it. Exactly what steps do I take to do this? How would you guys, who are actually good with Zbrush, take this lowpoly mesh and turn it into something sculptable?
