[Blender] How to decrease geometry from the skin modifier?

Hi so I'm using the skin modifier to extrude some vertices and it works relatively well except that it adds too much geometry/edge loops and there's too many for me to go back and remove manually. Is there a way to fix this? I've tried the decimate modifier from another suggestion but that had zero effect on it. And I've tried doing it manually but that's just inefficient.
