Syd Mead has passed away.

His concept art was behind Aliens, Blade Runner, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Tron, and many more movies. He was originally an industrial designer for Ford Motor Company and in time had clients with Philips Electronics, Sony, and Honda. He graduated from Art Center in Los Angeles in 1959.

I have his book Visual Futurist and strongly recommend it. He also has a course at The Gnomon Workshop where he shares his technique.

May he rest in peace and always be remembered.

    I got Syd's book Sentinel way back when I was studying Industrial Design at college. Later I went to work at Philips CID in Holland and got to know the art supply guy there who lent me one of Syd's original paintings which appeared in the book. I had it in my cubicle for about a year. In the design department Syd was a legend, and always will be to me.

    The guy basically shaped the way we all imagine sci-fi assets. One of the greatest, if not the greatest sci-fi/industrial concept designer.
