3D Model with multiple parts question HELP

When modeling for example a robot, do all the parts that make it up need a back side; meaning the side facing inwards the camera doesn't see?  Not having them would cut the poly count down drastically but, what is common practice?

Also, If you know of any blogs, forums, etc related to this or a similar a matter I would be grateful.

Thanks!

Never-to-be-seen surfaces can be omitted. Exceptions are if animation exposes parts that aren't seen in the modeled pose. Or if the character has removable parts, like removing a hat would expose the top of the head.

We have a bunch of info in our wiki about game modelling.
