Hey polycounters,
I have decided to start a big project. I've done a couple of characters and small scenes recently and they were fine, but this time I really want to push myself to the limit. I will design and model a character from scratch. I have a pretty clear idea of what I want to achieve with this project. When I look at my portfolio, I don't see anything that showcases my ability to work with complex and detailed designs, so, I want this to be complex, as well as technically and artistically difficult
. I have a tendency to over simplify my design and models and I want to break this habit.
So this is my idea so far. This character will be a powerful and elegant woman, with some fantasy elements.
This is just a small reference sheet/moodboard, i'm still working on research but this is the general idea.
Hopefully it goes well...
Let's go!

Would love to get some opinions.
Finish out your concept and NAIL it down completely before putting much time into production.
Use basic shapes to work out entire character first, focusing on silhouette before anything else. I don't recommend working on individual pieces at a time (like face only). Many reasons, but result will be wasted time.and do overs.
Just my opinion, but angry face dos not equal strength. Strength is calm and under control. It's villain who should look pouty and emotional.
Thanks a lot for the feedback guys. I'll definitely spend more time on the design before going further and I'll block out the proportions completely before attacking details. As for the point about not doing your own concepts, I'm personally doing this project to push myself creatively and for fun, not strictly just for my portfolio. But I do agree with you 100% that it's mostly useless to design your own stuff.

If you are gunning for an industry job, it just isn't the best approach.
