Convert Curve into Poly Edge?

Is there any way to convert a curve into a single editable edge/mesh?

Say I have a simple sphere, made live, then a curve created onto the live surface. I wish to convert that curve into an edge which I manipulate and extrude.

well you didnt specify in your title or first post!

Under surface> click the box next to extrude to bring up the distance > Select Distance
