Racing game suggestions?

I forgot how much I loved racing games. I've been playing GTA online on PC and all I do is race and checkout my sweet cars.

I loved the shit out of almost every F-Zero game, Mario Kart, Extreme-G, Wipe Out, etc.

There are so many different racing games out there that I'm not sure which would fit my taste.

I prefer something that doesn't require in-depth knowledge about cars, because I really don't know a damn thing. GTA makes it easy because you just select the "best upgrade" and just drive cars to test to see how they feel.

Grand Turismo? Forza? Project Cars? Need For Speed? Any others?

Which is a good racing game for someone in between casual & hardcore?

Well if that's the case then for me as an avid 'petrol head', I'll recommend Grand Turismo. Had first played the PSX original back in 1997, so ever since remained a fan of the franchise.

I would strongly recommend Forza Horizon! While i'm more into the Sim side of racing games, Forza horizon is a great bridge for a causal game you could play without a wheel, but the physics are enough that the car upgrades and handling makes a huge difference. A lot of the cars feel different from each other which in my opinion definitely adds a lot to the enjoyment.

Also has a handful of features for customizing the car, but surprisingly not as much as the FM7

project cars and assetto corsa work for me  - I do play them with a wheel and an oculus though so mileage may vary

What's a good arcade racing game? I love drifting but most of the racing games nowadays are going for realism (I am not much of a car nerd so i don't care about that). I had a lot of fun with gran tourism 1 before it became more and more realistic (and thus more punishing). Sega rally was one of my favorites back in the arcade days. Also a fan of mario kart but i already own that one

I like dirt rally a lot. Its realistic but I heard the newer one is more arcadey. You might like it for drifting and different road surfaces.

I loved the shit out of Carmageddon when it first came out. Sometime in the 90's? The crash physics were a hell of a lot of fun. Now the full original game is free to play on mobile. Sure, dated graphics. But still hella fun.
