Hello everybody, my name is Stelios and I am from Greece. Currently I am studying Informatics Engineering.
I started doing my thesis about a month ago on 3D Art for games. I love making 3d environments but (no cocky) I am really good at programing. I love doing both but art is what I like most. So here comes my question. Is it worth it (in terms of getting a job) spending all this time learning and doing art instead of focusing more on developing apps? Will I be able to make a living out of it?
Thanks

"In terms of getting a job" though I'd say there is more demand for programmers and engineers, but this varies by country and I do not know about Greece's situation. Still, generally speaking, I think making a living out of 3D art is harder because it can be very competitive and good positions aren't so easy to come across, whereas tons of companies big to small need engineers/programmers.
I know a good few that are having to share accomodation with 3/4 people given the cost of living in the area and despite earning what would be considered on the higher side of game dev salaries. (more market rate than what they are actually worth imo)
That said getting work is more than just dependent on if you're good at art. There's also being good at networking, whether your a recent graduate or experienced industry professional.etc.
There are many factors that affect hiring and I think the market and location is the most critical one starting out.
Having good work and hitting the requirements is a given, though perceptions can vary on what is considered good even in portfolio's of the very best artists.
It might get you an interview but it may likely get you ghosted as well.
I'd direct the op to these 3 threads for more information on the situation facing artists currently and then determine the best way going forward,

This post is just funny to read as the lot of us attic/basement dwellers contemplate on what is next gen.

Edit: I don't live in a basement. My chickens would catch a cold when they come over if I did and it just isn't warm enough to let them loose in the yard.
Big studios love highly skilled TDs.
