compositing fog pass vray

is there a proper way to render and composite the environment fog pass separately with maya (I guess any other software would be the same) and vray?

what I do is, I render a version of my scene with the flag "affect camera rays" set to off so they fog isn't visible,
then assign a material override so everything is black and render the fog pass. 

when I compose the two layers in photoshop I set the fog pass to screen or linear dodge but it always looks different compared to when I render the two together. the base render is almost always too bright..
what am I doing wrong and what is your workflow for this?
