Baking a bookshelf to a lower resolution

I need to reduce the polycount of some rows of books I've made. It's for a library in a game, so there will be a lot.

I don't want the books to be on a flat plane with all the books lined up exactly. So I'm trying to find the best way to do this.

I've tried using the transfer maps option in Maya and it partially worked. But before I start editing the low poly shape to fit the front and back differences- is there a better way to do this? I know you can render a texture from using a top and front camera, and maybe use two overlapping planes with alpha masks. But I don't know if that is any better or how that would work.

Any ideas?
