Zbrush - InsertMesh - Possible to insert at angle and maintain pivot?

I'm trying to hand-place place a bunch of scales along a surface. However, I can not figure out how to place the scales at a 45 degree angle, while maintaining a pivot at the point of insertion.

Example:
I create my shape, align it along the Z-axis, and capture it from a top-down view. This places the shape perpendicular to the surface when using Insert Mesh. This also creates a pivot-point along the surface, where the shape's base intersects the mesh.

This works well, but I would like the scales to come in at a 45 degree angle, to create an overlapping effect (that way I don't have to rotate every single scale manually with the transpose tool).

So I open up my shape again, and create insert mesh again based on a 45 degree angle in the viewport. This does work and places the mesh at a 45 degree angle, however, the pivot is now centered to the mesh's bounding box. The pivot floats well above the surface and is not helpful (and no it is not an issue of the Depth setting in Brush settings).

Anyone know if this is even possible?
