[Blender] Any idea how to make a braided rope?

this is the type of thing Im trying to make, its going to very high poly and then I will make a low poly thing later. any ideas? I looked a the various braid addons, but alas I couldnt see anything whichmakes it simpler.

There is so many step by step tutorials on this it's ridiculous. Software doesn't matter. If you can't translate from another program to blender, do more Blender 101 tutorials.

Id do something like this:

1. Create

tileable heightmap

2. Create spline with uvs

3. Displace the spline with your heightmap

so there isn't a plug etc for multiple threads?

there are no suggestions for a quick way of doing of with multiple threads, i was expecting a link to a addon I'd missed, but no worries I  already done it the hard manual way.
