So I just finished school and I want to work on becoming a concept artist, except I have no idea how to build a portfolio that would make someone want to hire me... All I have is my school portfolio

I am aware that my portfolio isn't the greatest and I am tired of always being embarrassed about it so I would really like any advice/critique I can to get make it better.
What works? What doesn't work?
How can I make my work more appealing?
What do I need to improve on to get a job?
etc...
