Im experimenting with substance painter to try and create a sort of a painterly oil-painted look, kind of like Ashely Wood, Monet, Singer Sargent etc...
Any feedback on how I could improve this texture? I dont want to go with flat shading, as I want to retain a thick, physically painted look. These are just some quick sketchfab renders. Thanks for looking B)

I definitely like the tactile feel of this.  It's not the impressionism I get from a Monet or Vangogh just yet?  I'd expect more hue variance like in a Van Gogh painting on the character as one possible improvement to the desired art direction.

Something tells me you will be sacrificing a certain perspective on the critique "the material needs to look like the material you're tring to communicate" and that a lot of the specular lighting will have to be painted in.

Thanks, I'll definitely look into painting more specular in, along with the hue variance suggestion. Part of the challenge has been finding those boundaries where I need to stop being so realistic while still keeping a sort of a half pbr/half painted look.

If it helps, look at the physical models Laika has made.  They've probably run into the same issues between the materials their assets are ACTUALLY made of versus the material that the asset is to specifically express.

Aight. Update time. Heres the flat shaded ones first

    And the PBR shaded ones

Painted in some shadows, added some grass (which I'm considering removing or increasing), toned down the specularity to emphasize the painterly style, but not all the way to retain a bit of texture... What I'm thinking now is either add a canvas texture to add a bit more physical-ness to it, scrap the experiment and do something else for a while, or maybe add just a bit more color variation. Part of me is saying just stick with the flat shading because it has potential but I don't want to take the easy way out with this!
