Using Shape Keys in a Modular Character setup to handle different body types?

Hello friends,

I'm preparing to make some modular characters for a Unity game. I am new to this workflow and I'm hoping to draw on from some more experienced people on this!

In particular, I'm anticipating needing to have the same clothing swaps work for multiple body types: slim, average, and large body type. (I will add that I'm using blender which I think is somewhat sacrilege on this forum, but what can I say, I use what I got)

It makes the most sense to me to model all of these swaps for the average body type, and then possibly use shape keys to adapt all the swaps to the other body types at once.

The idea is also to keep all these swaps on one armature. I'm including that detail because I'm sure there are considerations to make regarding weight painting when involving shape keys.

I'm a little new to modular character work flows but I'm excited to learn and make it work!!! Any help you can provide is very much appreciated :)
