First off, good work so far, I really like the thing where the statues are in (don't know the name ^^U), I'm pretty sure it will look great when finished, but there are some things about their face that I would change:
The forehead part is looking weird, the difference between both eyebrows is too strong. I would smooth that area.
The circled area in the image below also needs some love and I think the ears are too big
I also would pay some attention to the shape of the palm of the hand. There is an area rounded inward making some weird shadows.
Taking ab break from the statues, getting work done on the environment they go in. Would love to get some more feed back on the piece as a whole. The Mossy walls will be sculpted into rock/cliffside formations. The ground will be a combination of forested soil with mud, puddles, and random stones. I might add a few trees to frame the piece.
Decided against going with the forest temple look, instead focusing more on the facade itself. I only have a handful of changes I want to make before I start texturing it proper and do some in engine renders.
I think I am finished with most of the geo, now I can focus on texturing this. I might revisit some of the statures and make improvements. Possibly even do two others, to avoid repetition on the second level. As always would love to get some feed back!
I realized the material I was making was a bit too grungy so I am trying a different approach. I have being trying to find some cool tricks for water stains on stone, because I can't quite figure out how to get the look right. Would love to hear some suggestions. I did try substance painter with the particle fx for the leaks and rain, but I was having a hard time figuring out how I could turn the strokes into broken up gradients that look like water soaked into the stone. I might try again, but what I really want is for a way to do it in substance designer to allow for better automation of applying the material to other objects.
I really like your style. Really speaks to me. Lots of mystery. Makes me feel the same way I did when I read Conan books as a kid.
Are you finished with the latin facade? If not, you're going to post final images of that whhen it's done right? This skull temple looks awesome as well. My eye kind of wants the stone steps to be carved into the rock however, rather than looking like an inlaid structure made from a different material.
I also wanted to make a counter point to a critique above about some of the anatomy on the statues. The critiquer was totally right that the anatomy was a bit off, however, I've seen a lot of sculptures and ancient art like this and many times they do have errors. Especially paintings from that era -- they didn't have perspective or nothing. So I think if you choose to have some errors, as long as they read as a stylistic choice, that may be fine or even more desirable.
I really appreciate the Conan comparison, I will have to look up some related art and see anything that could help with this piece or the next! I do agree with the stone steps, was wondering if it would look better made out of similar stone, but I was also not sure if I should make a focused path material that stood out from the stone. I have been told by friends in the industry its important to hint at the available paths in the scene. Though my first attempt may have been heavy handed. I was thinking the skull needed to pop out more in the scene too. I might use a slightly different color to the skull, something closer to white, and use the same for the stairs, and rough them up a bit.
As far as the Latin facade, I have a few more pictures on my art station, https://www.artstation.com/lsleepless mind you not much more. I spent a few months more on it that I would have liked to, so I had to force my self to move on, and consider it done. Though I would still love any additional feedback on it, and could revisit it when I finish this new piece. If you would like to see different angles or some better up close shots I don't mind getting a few more.
Makes sense about the stone path. If it was ccarved into the rock, it would be hard to see for a player.
Maybe some alternate approach though is possible if you really liked the look. Like candles lining the edges, or weird bone figurines or something. Or, a little less contrived, maybe the non-path stone is overgrown with lichen, and the path is worn smooth. Just brainstorms.
Almost finished with this piece, going to do a few improvements on the giant skull, and something to draw out the stairs a bit, and another pass on the stone textures so they have a little bit more detail.
I am wrapping this up. I posted a bit of the break down and some additional renders on my art station. Still interested in getting feedback though! https://www.artstation.com/artwork/dOJGOK

Slightly higher res captures.

Good luck with it!

Work in progress, would love some feedback!
