Hi! My name's Leah and I'm a student of Animation and VFX and I've decided I need to really push myself this year before I graduate! So I'm learning ZBrush and Maya as well as trying other software like Nuke, 3D Coat and Substance Painter. I would like to get into game character development so any and all critique is super appreciated!
The Faun High Poly Sculpt
I also did a little process gif so I could keep an eye on how I was working
Keep doing what you doing for someone who just started with zbrush your work look promising Faun end up looking pretty nice even there are quite a few things that can be improve on her anatomy I think you should do another try closer to your concept art (really like her face shape in your concept art ) If you are serious about character design will be a good idea to get some proper education - books/video tutorials/mentor what ever works for you , as you already have solid drawing skills wont be that hard for you to transition to 3d
@carvuliero Thank you! I do need to sit down and read through some books as well as video tutorials. I'm hoping to run by the sculpts with a lecturer at university soon but right now we have a brief that is pretty time consuming. I might come back to the faun, but I have a habit of just leaving things
In other news, despite being busy... I've been working on blocking in a mermaid called Elara. The wonderful concept art is by Nikhil Shinde and you can see it here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/LQ1El I fell in love with the piece and really want to push myself by sculpting in pose. There's still lots to fix and I'll probably do a paintover before I continue.
Good for you .Definitely traditional sculpting can teach you a lot more then digital tutorials also if I ware you I would prioritize what important for me as for university schedule goes and not spend much time on "required subject" that I have not interest in (for example if you want to be character artist doesn't make much sense to study architecture and environment art at least in the begging , when master one subject you can expend to another ) If I may suggest you using block like shapes (primitives) to block your shapes - much easier to keep symmetry and proper volume distribution - working is straight line could be easier then curve , just like in academic drawing
@carvuliero Wow, thank you so much! This piece is definitely going to be a learning curve for me so I'll need to keep at it. I did start with primitives but I think I started shaping them too soon before I had all the proportions right.
Sadly I haven't had time to actually do much lately cos of deadlines and stuff and I can't even post images from that because I signed an NDA Anyway, here's a minor update on Elara, mostly just on her face.
I've had a little time the last few days so I pulled together some sketches for a demon character called Vex. I want to use her to practice a full 3D game ready model with hand painted textures.
And a REALLY rough T-Pose
I haven't done colours yet so I want to mess around with that this week as well as maybe pulling together an expression sheet.
@Erisian Thank you so much! I am still very new to all of this and I have a lot to learn but it means a lot heading that I'm doing well I feel like your own work on your sketchbook is ahead of mine! I really need to learn how to do realism
@Yedp Thank you so much! I'm hoping when I look back at this thread in a year I'll see an improvement
In other news, I finished Elara! Took longer than I wanted cos life got int he way and I really think I'll need to upgrade to ZBrush 4R8 soon but hey, Core will do for now. Check it out on ArtStation: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/2o44v
Did a quick thing in between the many other things I need to finish but ya know.... I wanted to try and practice some anatomy but it turned into a little bust of an old painting of mine:
Working on my entry for the 3D Bust Challenge on Sketchfab. Finished the sculpt so on to retopo and unwrapping then finally doing the hand painted part of the challenge!
Been messing around with a little Deet fan art from the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance at lunch times. Gonna do a rough retopo and do some cute painterly texture. Hopefully get a couple of subtle animations in too
Working on a sculpt for Dave Cave Draws draw this in your style. Just some tidying then going to pose and paint her in ZBrush, something I don't do very often...
Made myself a female base using bits of other projects. It's an upgrade from the last base I was using but it still needs some love. Hopefully keep building at it as I use it
