I ceased my subscription this year as Autodesk doesn't have any plans to develop Mudbox any further then it's current state which I say 2016/2017 will suffice in most, digital sculpting requirements for everything else there is always zBrush or 3D coat if you prefer.
I prefer to never have to use zbrush But thats not happening because thats what Im stuck with at work. I tried 3dcoat, tools are very robust like zbrush but again not a fan of the interface. I work in the film vfx industry so i prefer to use mudbox more. I don't really want to start a flame war.
I was even thinking about a flame war. I personally enjoy Mudbox myself over both zBrush and especially 3D Coat. Mudbox requires the user have good knowledge of traditional modeling workflow then sculpting in the program is wonderful.
Apologies if I sound offensive. Glad to know another fellow Mudbox user. I guess that might be why I find it a great fit for me because I started with traditional modeling, everything just make sense to me

That is exactly it. There are more without a traditional modeling background, then those with; therefore that is why Mudbox didn't grow compared to zBrush. I believe Autodesk in that sense did have the right idea but didn't realize the statistic of the two types of modelers, something Autodesk has done in the past.
Autodesk put Mudbox on ice for 2 years while porting features to Maya, but after the 2018 release in the near future, they will bring it out of cold storage. They got a lot of criticism on the beta forums, but seems it's not dead.
its really not that hard to improve mudbox. Seriously, they could have added a lot of the features without much development. For example. UDIM support could be just a simple file rename function and still have it use (UVTILE) format internally. Or having a freeze brush where you can toggle, like the select face brush.
onionhead - Besides bug fixes don't expect much new with Mudbox 2018 compared with 2017. You can do UDIM with Mudbox, it's the numbering scheme that is different then say Mari.
CreativeSheep: Thats quite disappointing. I hope there is at least one new thing. I understand that it can do multi UV tile painting. but UDIM is the standard for film. If I need to import my textures to Mari, theres not an easy way to bring in.

Actually there is, I'd have to find the tool, if you want ? I understand your frustration don't feel too bad Mudbox at it's current state can do a lot, probably even a few years from now will still be relevant. Look at it like this, two years passed almost identical versions of Mudbox and it's still relevant. There is only one thing, and you mentioned it; which is. You must know traditional modeling.
CreativeSheep: I realized I completely misread your comment. For some reason I thought you said there is one new tool for mudbox.
Yes Jens scripts works just fine. But its still best for mudbox to have this functionality out of the box. It just makes sense. no one in film/games uses UVTILE format.
Hope this brings Mudbox to a good state of competition. I've done my part of telling people about it, submit ideas, etc. I few of them i think are getting consideration. The new Manager seems quite different from the last one too, so.. let's hope a better future. Really love Mudbox.
well, perhaps the success of substance painter can motivate autodesk to enhance the mudbox paint toolset and viewport. it's certainly been my choice for texturing so far but i wouldn't mind PBR preview and e.g. layer instancing and a fresh look at the projection tool.
i will cheerfully allow them to neglect the sculpting side of it entirely in favour of that. neglecting is what they are best at anyway or so i was told.
Things are getting really interesting in the Mudbox Ideas section, at least there's some movement.. Check them out and keep supporting the ideas with Kudos guys,

and yes its a private forum...
Yeah, but we still have to wait and see what comes. The fact that they are opening up the feedback again should make it obvious.
