I'm sure I am missing something simple, but I can't figure out why my terrain has this patchy lighting on it. tried looking around for a solution and can't find anyone else having a similar issue. I tried increasing the static lighting resolution but that had no effect. any help would be much appreciated.

Try setting the static lighting level scale to different values, and bake. If it doesn't work, try the indirect lighting smoothness. If that also doesn't work, you can reset every setting to its default value, with the reset icon next to its parameter.
