Hey Polycounters, this is a little pet project i've been working on on-and-off. Its a fan art piece from an amazing little indie game called Owlboy (check it out if you havent already, included some reference from the game)
I'm currently in the middle of the sculpting phase, some parts haven't been touched at all at this point. Any C&C would be much appreciated, especially regarding the skull (looking at you, sexy character artist peeps) Cheers!
I like that you're tackling a 2D piece with limited reference - good luck! I think the two different styles of wood look a little off (body vs rudder). I'd match the big rudder piece to the more chipped and detailed style of the body. The wood grain lining up between the two pieces looks a little strange to me as well, but if all the wood in the scene was the same style it might look a little less jarring. Great start on the sculpt!
Thanks for the feedback @godejon! i'll definitely experiment with keeping the woodtype consistent, though I kind of want to keep the swirly woodtype for the outermost rudder as it's been directly lifted from the reference
You got all that from a side shot in a 2-D side scroller? I'm insanely jealous. The reference pic you posted does leave a lot to the imagination but you filled in a lot of the blanks quite well.
@OFPismySOP thank you! well i didn't just pull reference from that one screenshot, i also looked at a lot of stylized game art for ideas on how to approach the project
Finally a little update! Progress is really slow due only being able to work on it on and off, but I'm having lots of fun with it The bottom image is my initial idea for the color scheme, let me know what you all think. Cheers!
Finally another update! Wrapping up the zBrush phase and would love to hear some feedback before i move on If there's anything you feel that looks off or could be improved please do let me know!
Update time! Got some great feedback, and i was able to wrap up the sculpting phase. Here is a color comp done in PS, as well as the final sculpt. Feedback most appreciated, especially regarding color schemes.
Loving this piece man! Like I said on Facebook, you nailed the likeness! However I'm not a huge fan of the red and teal colors you've chosen for the wood.
@Stavaas thanks for the kind words! Yeah im still gonna experiment with the color scheme, the idea is definitely to keep it somewhat whimsical and bold. If you have any suggestions for a color scheme id love to hear it
Mini update: Texturing is rolling along. Still unsure about the color scheme and the roughness values on the metallic parts. (and for some reason substance's iRay makes my normals kinda blobby). If y'all have any feedback regarding those issues I would be more than appreciative, even if it means re-sculpting certain areas haha
Weekend update: Did another texture pass, adjusted the colors, and cranked up the roughness on metals. Feeling much better about this at this point. Thoughts?
I really love that rope. If I had to make a critique, I would add some blue or purple to the spec color of the metal to reflect a bit of the metal color. Maybe vary the color a bit on the wood by giving some sections a lighter wood color. The cannon on the side is getting a bit lost in front of the part connecting it. Maybe lighten that up as well, I don't know. All in all, the sculpt is really rad.
Oh yeah, and the poles on the outer edge look like they have too dark of crevices.

Serious though. I love that cannon, dude.
Looking forward to seeing this textured!
@pixelpatron Thanks as well! Yeah it's really good, very much a homage to 16bit games of the SNES era
