Hey guys as the title states I'm trying to work on my character skills. This is a WIP thread for me to try and get as high quality as I can. I've been rushing my chars and completing not so satisfactory work so crits and critiques are more than welcome!

To match the concept I still need to go back into Maya and make a second beltstrap to overlay the chest straps. I also need to tackle making a belt around his waist and then tie it. I'm going to try my hand at splines for that.
I do like the way it looks this way since it make more sense visually. Still kinda miss the WOW styled size lol might keep playing with it.
@Green Pirate64 Glad you like it. I'm probably going to come up with some rough color schemes after I'm done the UVs for his gear. Might go for a more orange hue to the leather to contrast his skin. As for the gloss I'm excited to get back into substance and play around with that myself!
material IDs is the way to go, but you can always try some other options for the brush. I think tangent wrap is the default, but maybe play around with the other settings and see if it helps.
also remenber you can paint flat on the texture sheet as well. (press F1)
Here are some glam shots for what I have so far. My next step will be to add hair and fur for his beard and gauntlets.
Nah its just regular gloss, but it is kinda high and I have the brightness boosted on the lights
here is a variation with the gloss toned down.

Edit: Im working on getting the AO to show more so there is variation in the shadows.
But i am definitely liking this a lot more. Thx @Ged
