Community Game Project

So, the other day, I was looking at the long lists of Polycount people looking for fellow Polycounters under jobs and freelance, and thought: it could be a really cool idea if there was something like a community game project.  It could be something simple, or something grand; it could be anything.

What immediately pops in my mind is a certain amount of people - knowledgeable people, and people learning, going together to create a game as representative of the forum (Polycount) and for it to get Greenlit, and go the whole way.  It could be anything - a platformer, a shoot-em-up, a fighting game, horror game - anything.
For instance: it could be put to a vote - different categories.  There would then be a few 'deciding minds' who would be in charge, and so forth.

If you think about it: there are a lot of people looking, and a lot of people looking to learn, and there would already be every possible category represented on here - 3D artists - high and low poly, lighting people, animators, musicians, concept artists, UI artists, and it could in theory be very powerful - and very interesting.  It could be quite a group.

I realize there would be logistical problems, but really not more than any other game project.
As for the size of it, then it should be a bit of a tour de force - because why not?

There's a lot that could be going on with it.  It would create a buzz, for the people involved, and the website, and there would through it all be a very good base to get the game going, through its followers, and people interested.

Naturally I haven't thought through every aspect of this idea.  I know a hundred roadblocks could be erected as to why not.  But, as an idea, I think it could be something, so I thought of airing it.

Good idea. I suggest making a thread in
Unpaid Work (General requests, mod teams, niche projects, etc.)

They are overrated, same with game and sound designers... it is enough that it looks amazing, amiright?!?

Seriously though, it is an intriging idea, but like any proper project, its better to have someone in charge than a whole group making decisions (keep in mind I am talking about decisions, not disencouraging consultation).

We aren't missing programmers.  I would be quite sure there are many multi-talented people on this forum - as goes for sound designers.  Also, i didn't say a whole group would be making decisions.  I suggested 'a few deciding minds' - meaning two or so people, who know what they're doing, making the overall directive decisions.
I think it could be done, but it would have to be people who would want to do it; but I also think there would be quite a few who would want to - depending on if it should ever be a reality.

OA was going to be that and a bag of chips, but a lack of concrete direciton turned that into a mess.  Programming wasn't an issue as it was literally new original data for a just-open-sourced polycounter's favorite game and I figured that would be a win-win.  In the end, polycounter involvement was weapon icons, some weapon meshes, and some textures, from 2005, and those assets hold up better than the rest of the game (which involved lizards, jiangshi, schoolgirls, space marines, slingshot valkyries, etc. all moving like they have rigormortis). It's kind of a last refuge for many to return to the older vanilla gameplay with no elitism barrier, as well as the *nix demographic
i learned this the hard way and am rebooting
also indie games are far more lucrative than ever.  the plz-join-my-mod era is long over when an artist could get their fantasy into reality with Unity/UE4/Godot/etc..  and there's the workshop systems out there for some games which are another opportunity to rake in the dough.  don't underestimate virtual materialism
