any idea why this might be happening? how to fix it? everything seems to be fine through characterize, then fingers/toes get wonky after applying Control Rig to source.

I think, you characterized the left fingers to the right fingers slot and vice versa, the same with the foot? That happened to me once in maya

triple checked that. the left/right match correct. it only happens after assigning control rig. without it everything's correct.
