Initial sketch and block in for an m4a4 paintjob. Want to emulate the types of paintjobs I'd see on work by Chris Foss, Syd Mead, and Peter Andrew Jones. I also looked to a lot of 1970's era advertising to see what the most "70's" color schemes would be. I think a combination of the color source, and the design principles of these prominent sci fi illustrators of the time might turn into something fun.
Little more progress and testing. Going to start looking around at the ref I've collected to see if I can find some other interesting decal ideas. The stars are cool, but I think searching around for something a little more "personal" might yield some more interesting results. Thanks so much for the kind words guys!
Little more progress and sketching. Trying to figure out what kind of decals / icons / symbols will work. Mostly doodling, but I really should go back and start going through ref again to come up with something stronger.
First actual in-game test. Colors are pretty close to what I want, overall weight is decent, but I think the detail work will help that a bit. Going to trace out all of the engraved lettering with colors from the swatch so everything should be nice and unified. Using the original specular map as my sort of "roadmap" for where my paint irregularities should be, so that it will fit well with the wear and with the base weapon.
Going to go with this basic idea for the logo design. I think the basic idea behind this logo will work well if combined with the CT wire snippers logo and the color combination I'm using for the finish.
Trying to sketch out a sort of spacey variant for the CT logo. The top one was the first test, but it looked far too thin and delicate compared to all the other elements around it, so I'm trying to find something a little chunkier.
Current version of another one of the logo's in progress. Not really my strong point, but I've been looking at a lot of other workshoppers lately and Honey Badger does absolutely fantastic logo work. I think his work is super strong in a way that mine isn't so I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone and learn some new things. Side note: It's far easier for people to think I know what I'm doing without a WIP thread. ;D
This fits the theme so well! I love the colour scheme. Only thing I would mention is that I think you will need some sort of significant focal point like a logo or illustration for the skin to be a classified - but I can see you are working on that great logo.
Little more progress. Need to get a little chunkier with some of my lines, and bring a little more definition out of the places where the planes change. Started removing paint from some areas to expose the base-coat. Going to spend a while working on the wear and surface noise and hopefully have another update in a few hours.
It feels like the very middle area of the body would use some action, overall like the direction you took and all the shapes and lines feel fluid just how I like.
Changed and refined some shapes. Only parts let are the mag and the logo for the rear stock. Once those are in place I'll do a short run on the wear maps, and do one final pass on the line-work to get rid of any leftover wobbly parts.
Nice and clean skin. Really like the colors. Which workbench material will you use in the end? I think you can do some crazy stuff with gunsmith.
I went with custom paint job with a moderately high phong setting. When I think 70's paintjobs I think of like high gloss enamel paint. I didn't want to push the phong too far and wash the brown out too much, so I tried to find a reasonable middleground. I really need to do some more gunsmith finishes. I have a sort of rusting effect I keep meaning to apply to something.

Little more progress on the initial block-in, workbench test #1.
Colours selected are great.

I like your color schemes
