@Dennispls Thanks!! @Pshyco lol, gracias Edgar! @Montreseur Thank you! @Galcohen I always paint and design using Photoshop, since I think is the most versatile tool (apart from pen + paper, haha)
Just wanted to thank everyone who gave us feedback or a simple encouraging comment. It's always nicer to create things when you have such a good response! Zameen had a great reception on the internet: Reddit went crazy (5382 positive votes and counting!), people gave him a lot of love on Artstation (87k views!), and he was even featured in Overwatch Central (2:30)!! Thank you!!
Now I can only wait for Tim ( @MadGunslinger ) to blow-up the internet with his awesomeness!!!
After he sent me the 3D art he did, I tried to nail down the design, using his blockout as a ref. Working like this allow me to check if the character will make sense once it is translated to 3D, so it's super helpful to work in 2D and 3D simultaneously.
Did the bakes for the character this weekend. My aim was 25K tris since that's the average tri count of Overwatch models. Pretty happy with the outcome!
Alright so I've set up everything and put flat colors under the bakes. Using Metal-Roughness, but still need to make the textures. As of now, it's just flat colors with the bakes to test how it will look and if I can match the shading.
@gfelton Thanks! @Pshyco =D @artofmars Still need to change some stuff and then do some actual texturing hehe, but thanks! @Kaine123 Yup, you're right! Some other colors could also be a bit brighter. Thanks!
It's nice to finally see the model with some colors. Even as just flats it looks great and I think that the shading is spot on. Can't wait to see how much better it will look when the actual textures start to form!
@Magihat Thanks! More coming soon tm @Blade113 Hehehe that would be preeeetty cool to say the least ^^ @Jakub yesss @Tectonic Thanks and hopefully get better! ^^ @GeorgeCrudo That's probably not gonna work, but thanks! @Tits Thank youuu! @ohpleasestopit Oh please stop it 8^) (Sorry I had to hahaha) But no really, thanks!
So I wasn't gonna post this, since I just made it for myself. But I figured this might be helpful for other people too! Made a screenshot of the character and put him next to actual overwatch characters to see if he fit in. He kinda did, but there's a lot of subtle changes to be made when you put them next to eachother. I went ahead and overpainted the render to make him fit better. It's a really helpful thing to do, so I thought I'd post it. This will be what I'll do today as well as try to figure out of some anisotropic shader in marmoset would work on his beard. Wish me luck! For an easy compare, put them open in a new tab and switch between the two images
EDIT: Got some feedback from the awesome Dimi Devos aswell, to add some Color variation. (Purples in the orange, blues in the green) As well as to add some graphics, like all characters have. Just did a quick test with some random stuff, so this isn't final, but it works well.
Alright, super happy with how the anisotropic hair came out! Applied the changes to the textures aswell. If anyone has some feedback, let me know. For now, I'll be working on the guns and the snake!
hair is looking good! don't forget to give the tips of his mustache and beard some transparency/feathering. I noticed a lot of the characters have it (tracer's and zarya's bangs are a good example).
Cant believe I have missed this thread, Epic work so far! one thing ive noticed is overwatch characters sometimes have small dark spots on their skin, look at roadhog for example. might be something worth adding, him being an older man and all.
@Tectonic Thanks! And yeah I tried that. It didn't look great though. Maybe Ill try it again then @Cremuss Thanks @dropyhop thank you! @Rickpwnz Glad you like it! @jmiles Thanks! @lotet That is a great idea! I will definitely add that! @Sukotto Glad you like it and indeed, the liver spots is a great idea!
Been on a holiday this weekend. Currently baking the big gun (Already retopped and unwrapped). The process is pretty slow though, since I can only work on it after work. But progress is progress! Thanks everyone for the kind words and critiques!!
Looking good! If you wanna be nitpicky; I think some of your bevels in the highpoly could be a bit wider to read better. Especially on some of the squae pieces and the big circular rings, but that really is just nitpicking.
Wow! you guys really nailed that Overwatch style even down to the color schemes perfectly! If Blizzard would put Zameen in the game nobody would notice it being fan made

@Cremuss Thanks! And here's another WIP
@Pshyco Hahahaha thanks Edgar ^^
Stopping for today. Hoping to get this and the other weapon done by the end of the week. Then, on to texturing.
BTW, what software did you use for the 2D drawings? thanks!

Here's an early wip of the handgun! Trying out quadchamfer for this one!
Pretty happy with the outcome!

I agree with Lotet, adding some moles or liver spots on him would definitely help show his age.
@Cremuss Thanks

Here's one of the last WIPs before I post the final piece. Up next is the snake, and a big one: presentation!
