@Twister3@gfelton thanks for the comments I plan on changing the material on the pillar part to more like the long part at the top of the fireplace so it's like actual pillars holding it up not made of bricks like it is just now

Sun rays are really intense, I suggest toning them down. I also hope you add a few more small things like the empty box, it adds a lot of life and personality to your scene.
@gfelton absolutely this is no where near finished haha got a few books going next to the empty box and some pokers for the fireplace etc then the rest of the room haha Yea I realised about the rays after I took the screen shots then went into photoshop but couldn't be bothered going back haha I'm going to be working on it pretty hard this week so hopefully get a lot done. Thanks for the comments everyone I love reading them it also keeps me focused on getting it finished
This is coming along great! Lots of nice little details, and good colors overall.
It looks a bit odd where the brick above the mantle ends on the diagonal. A bit of geometry detail there would help a lot. Don't just terminate the tiling texture along a hard edge there. Add some brick modeling there.
Strange shading error on the front of the mantle.
The firebox behind where the fire would be, it should show some soot damage.
Wood floor looks unnatural going right into the firebox. It would catch fire. It should be a brick floor inside there instead.
@Eric Chadwick thanks for the critique I realised that I hadn't put in the stone base just after I posted this and looked at the refs again haha I'll for sure add this. What shading error are you talking about though can see it? The black area at the front? That's supposed to be a sort of dirt / soot part. Haha I could maybe try to make that more apparent I was thinking I could maybe use a decal for it and same for the back? I've never worked with them before.
still going with this just took a break. made this chair today and was trying out the substance painter renderer and it comes out pretty good bit like keyshot i think.

I'm sorry, I never replied to this. There's a triangular edge to the soot on the right side of the front. This looks like a shading error, because it's such a hard straight diagonal line. It looks like a bit like a low-resolution vertex color artifact.
@Eric Chadwick no problem , yea it was a vetex painted dark soot like material i think i may have sorted that now, is there anyway around it without upping the vertex count in 3ds max?
Looking really nice man! The only thing that looks off to me is the tiling texture ending on the fireplace, but that has been mentioned before. That chair is looking really nice too, having some of your wooden props a little shinier will really add a lot of life I think.
@Benvox2 thanks for the input man yea I'm going to add in a few actual bricks into that fireplace soon I'm trying to focus on the other parts of the room just now in particular the main table and cabinets on the left. There is a bit less roughness there I will try to make it show in the renders
Nice man! All the props really help add story and interest to the overall scene. They also look really well made. What do you use for prop texturing? I also like the dust particles near the new fireplace!
@Benvox2 thank you very much I've been using substance painter and designer for this entire project. First used it at the start of this project and I love it
I went to the Harry Potter studio tour recently and I got you some reference video from the actual Gryffindor common room just in case you wanted it. I'll put it online for you as soon as I remember when I'm home ^_^
@Adelphia Sorry it took so long, here is the link to the footage https://youtu.be/phDEv2i-jXU It's only brief and my other half shot it, but hopefully it will be at least a little useful ^_^ I was mainly thinking of the carpet, hence the lack of attention to most other things haha
@robochrish cheers for that I'll definitely use it when I go back to the rug I'm almost finished the room now so just doing a couple more props and I will be done.
Awesome man. It turned out really well. The prop placement especially helps to add a lot of story to the room. Do you mind me asking how long the whole thing roughly took you? I know it is near impossible to keep track..
like it, what annoys me is that some meshes simply do not have shadow under them . like the butter beer barrel, it's very, subtle tables and chairs are not amitting any shadows either
@wirrexx thanks for the critique I have a few different light sources coming from different directions so they might be canceling out most of their shadow I'll keep that in mind next time perhaps I have on of my lights unchecked on cast shadows I'll have to have a look thanks.
@Benvox2 thanks, it's all static lighting I've got one directional and a few points at a low intensity, my biggest weakness in 3d right now I feel is my lighting so I feel I need to work on that some.
I think it looks awesome! Loved these movies as a kid so this gives me a bit of nostalgia. I think you've done the environment great justice, it came out really well!

Thanks again
You could try darkening the green one, and lightening the red one. Especially the red one.
How about a fire in that hearth? Or maybe some coals with a face in them?
I'll put it online for you as soon as I remember when I'm home ^_^
thanks man ill have a look when you get it up
