zero experience with viewport canvas but are there perhaps vertex colors on the model that get multiplied over your texture? as in - does viewport canvas somehow trigger a different shading mode? i have seen other parts of max do this. object properties -> general -> display properties: look for a check mark next to an option called 'vertex channel display' and turn it off.
