How to flatten a curved high-poly mesh for projection rendering

Hi.

I have a scanned tree trunk that i would like turned into a tileable texture. The problem is that since it's curved i can't properly set up projection rendering and i can't figure out how to or if it's possible to flatten it out. Any tips?
