Is it more stable? Is it a free or paid upgrade? How much is it?
It is a free upgrade for all current users I remember. As far as stability goes much stabler than 1.8 and very stable from what I have experienced however I have not used the release version yet.
any new features?I remember not even being able to rotate the direction of the grain on the wood ended up feeling woefully disapointed with the time spent learning the Quixel suite since moving to substance painter

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty certain I read somewhere that rotation functionality has been added.
Oh and don't get me wrong, I was really keen on pre ordering it(didn't know it was going to release this month) and I am going to buy it soon
Hell I've been stalking Wiktor's piece for a month now
(give this guy a favourite!) but not only because of Quixel suite, Just happened to be working on a similar project(I too was making a Wipeout ship using Quixel)
I was really hoping it would be independent from photoshop
Opened it and played around for a minute. Taking some getting used to, with little things changing, but it feels great, stable, and the painting is so smooth. Love it so far.

The Suite was a bit clumsy up to 1.8. The biggest strength - photoshop - seemed to hinder it too much.. so I fell in love with Substance Painter. But as I get a free upgrade.. I'll give it a shot.
I think I'm missing something with the 3D paint mode of NDO o.O It just doesn't wanna co operate. DDO took some an afternoon of playing around til it started to make sense, now it feels a lot smoother than the last version, Equally stable/unstable. Nowhere near as smooth an experience as 3D coat but the 3DO viewport is excellent. And took about 7 hours for the license confirmation email >.<
