Steam introduces video tutorials section

It's up now and there are a few videos already available including new Tor Frick tut. You can download project files in the library and stream videos. It also has regional pricing and regional gift restrictions so you may not worry about people exploiting that.

It's a really good opportunity to share and get rewarded for your effort at the same time.

Shame it's all streamed, rather than for download (as quite a few videos on Steam have been).

This actually made me bite the bullet and get Modo indie 901 to try it out despite the lack of scripting support, since I could pick up Tor's intro tutorial. Normally I really like what he does (his modular masterclass from a few years back is pure gold) but I have to say I'm disapppointed with it... I find it superficial and sort of confusing for a 1 hour+ tut, e.g. he's showing the ring and loop selection a few times going like "you just do this" without mentioning the hotkey or saying "oh I forgot what it was, I have not used it in so long". At 5 bucks right now can't really call it a rip-off but if you're going to sell a tutorial you might want to script what you're saying better and consider covering the UI more in depth.

No hard feelings but I feel it had to be said.

havent seen it but.... scripting yes, even tutorials need pre-post production, hate when they dont think they need to edit their videos, its not a class nor a stream plan and fix your damn videos. In the other note i prefer less UI explaining and go direct to the concept , dont know how to insert loops, google it TLDR, best tutorials are short but to the point, for that make a plan.

This is pretty cool.  I like how steam is diversifying from just games to other media. This could be great for content creators that are trying to get dota/tf2 tutorials out there. Just another potential revenue source. I wounder how much of a cut steam/valve takes.

I'm assuming they take their standard 30% cut. But hey, more eyes on the tutorials and pretty convenient.

It seems like a smart idea, especially given Valve's continued push to generate revenue through community items. Some of the indie software packages already include example content for Dota/TF2 and this seems like a nice way to let users pick up additional learning supplements. Beyond just the convenience of the platform, Steam's user reviews could be really helpful here too.

Love the idea, but I have absolutely no interest in streamed anything. Hope the authors of said tutorials are given the option to allow downloading of the video. Sure I can stream stuff, usually at 144p - 240p. Youtube tutorials are fine since they can be downloaded at max quality using various browser extensions.

I love the direction Valve are taken with user created content but I feel YouTube is where most people go for video guides. Hopefully Valve just allow quality tutorials to be published or it will became full of rubbish which will ruin it.

@Gibbons3D have you seen the games they allow to be sold on Steam and be greenlit? I really doubt Steam will do anything to make sure the tutorials on the store will hq content.

I don't know exactly how it works, but I think that you'll need a direct invitation by Valve in order to publish a tutorial on Steam: that fact was mentioned in this thread.

Cannot find any information about how to get selected to submit tutorials, did half an hour of google search. Why is it a secret !!
