"Threads can now be previewed without clicking directly in to them."
Not sure if thats a good switch tho. In theory it is nice, but people will skim over most threads then, leading to less interaction and comments Im sure, mainly for the people that need them the most
A spoiler box function would be really cool too, like putting text and everything into a box that is collapsed by default, that would also be a solution to that loading images thing mentioned earlier

This is the first thing i thought of, i'm a little concerned about that too.

I don't really understand this argument. Getting to the information faster is always a good thing - and I doubt that someone not willing to give constructive criticism in the first place is ever likely going to be tricked into doing so by the current system. The current, old school layout requires one to click threads individually in order to peek at them, and I doubt that anyone really has the time to do so (hence the popularity of the Waywo thread). I would think that the upcoming preview system will increase traffic to individual threads a whole lot, even making Waywo a bit redundant.
Of course we'll have to wait and see. Personally I would love to see threads with nice big thumbnails showing even without a mouseover - but the upcoming system is already very close to that, and I am sure that from a layout point of view the design decision that has been made is the best possible.
i dont agree pior.
getting the information faster may be a good thing, but how its presented can make a lot of difference. for example, the ranking stars on the old Conceptart.org affected how i looked at those threads a lot. and the layout of artstation, another example, doesnt to me invite for any discussion, only "omg amazing" comments, which is really showing. even the hottest posts has like 6 comments.
previewing threads may not be that bad, it could very well be a much more effective way of browsing content, but it should be of great concern preserving and improving what polycount does best, critical and honest discussions where you can give and recieve thorough feedback on game art. browsing pretty pictures fast we have a bunch of other sites for. critical discussion is found in much fewer places.
just wanted to say that i agree that the star rating on threads as you can find in some forums makes me check out specifically only those threads with the high ratings, kind of a circle-jerk feature that. i hope these do not find their way onto polycount.
...which otherwise could really do with a bit of an overhaul (last time in 2004 or thereabouts?), so overall looking forward to that!
I'm not familiar with Vanilla, but there's two addons which I'd cry to have. Some type of HoverZoom for thread thumbnails and another one for viewing all images in a thread. God that would be cool.
Stick and Thomas - I totally agree that star ratings and view counts are pointless, and that's precisely the reason why they are not shown on the current PC
Thread thumbnails/preview are totally different though - they are just a faster way to get to a destination. Again, the people not willing to post constructive comments are not going to post them regardless of the layout ...
At the end of the day, we'll all know first hand very soon ! I personally cannot wait to have a much easier access to tons of great threads that I would otherwise miss (and the same goes for beginner threads in need for feedback).
You can see the page views on the current version. Its just not visible at all times.
But I guess it really depends on how the preview works. if it just shows the picture, or how much of the text it shows. It will certainly help weed out click bait. But, it also makes that first sentence / picture extra important. Either way, im damn excited. Even if the previewer isnt all that great, you can still click things manually like you`ve been doing.
Did Polycount receive a massive update to the current site in 2010 before the TF2 contest? I mean I was not around in those days but I remember reading it somewhere.
In the coming couple of weeks Polycount is going to be receiving a much needed overhaul to its backend software
...and I just wanted to say that as we're gearing up for this, we had caught a few bugs we'll want to squash before we go live. So while 'a couple of weeks' could be correct, 'a few weeks' may be more accurate. The good news is that we're still almost there, its just a matter of ironing out a couple new kinks before we flip the switch.
I wanted to mention, too, that the reactions in this thread has been great. The best part of this update is finally having a means of getting you the features or changes to polycount you - and we - have wanted for a long time.
Isn't this version polycount 2.0 or 3.0? I forget with my old feeble brain
It's at least V4 by my reckoning. There was the planet quake version, the version between that and the update in 2010, 2010 to the present and the forthcoming version. It's quite possible that I'm missing one somewhere too.
At least version 4, yeah. I actually went on a nostalgical trip through the internet archive recently, and forgot just how young I was back then (as was evident by my posts).
Have you guys integrated the adverts correctly this time around? Chrome here and they overlap some of the top elements haha!
-I've never had a issue with polycount banner ad's because it's free service to the public, actually it's the only site whitelisted on my Adblock. Just making sure you squash bugs
Hopefully we will be able to access the old archived "What are you working on" threads from the past years.
Oh and also still have an easy access to the info on the wiki pages.
Hey guys! Just a quick update to let you know that the update is happening tomorrow. This will result in a bit of down time on the site, so expect that to happen at some point during the day.
Tomorrow I'll do a much more in depth post about the new site, what to expect, where it is at, and how you can help us improve it.

Also loving steam integration

I also second a spoiler or "hide" box too.

Got some quotes for you.

Looking foward the new version of polycount. With Artstation i have zero interest in forums nowadays, but let's see how all changes.
We asked several things ages ago, like thumbnails

Yes!!!! Mobile theme hype!?
In your pants?
