Do I need to show the progress of the creation my items for participating in this competition?
Yes
I started a brewmaster winter set, polycount and texture budget are low for the body and keept me from going too crazy
Do you think it's good? Or too boring?
Hello guys,
I'm new to 3D world and Dota 2 workshop, but I've been playing Dota 2 for such a long time and I think I would give myself a chance for joining this competition. But I've got some questions hope you guys could answer me.
1. The theme is about winter season, does this mean that all the concept of items, weapon should have a cold colors scheme?
2. For more chance to be accepted by Valve we should choose the right hero which match the best with the theme, right?
3. For now, which one will be easily accepted by valve than the other one? Such as making single item, or a whole set, or ward, etc??? Is there any statistic and inforamtion about this?
lol man, your profile pic and this draw me a pretty clear picture about yourself man, and im really not sure if i (and maybe others) would like that
but anyway, onto the point, you want answer, i'll try to give you some
1.No, whatever color scheme that fit into the theme is fine.
2.Technically speaking, yes. Icy theme heroes sure fit pretty well with the theme of the competition, and thus, easier to work with/ coming up with idead, but that doesnt necessarily mean you can not work with others heroes. And Valve (imo) will pick whatever sets/items that look GREAT and FIT into the dota2's world, and since Valve doesnt have anthing to do with this competition, a mediocre set/item that have a winter theme that fit with an icy themed hero would have a pretty low chance to get in regardless.
3.There's no real official statement or anything that would help comfirm what they would like to pick and what they would not, although they seems to prefer sets than single items for the past months so, god know what they're up to. But as you said you are new to the dota2workshop and the 3D world in general, i'd suggest you getting started with a single.
I really wanted to do a ward and was thinking about about making a (Amanita Muscaria) mushroom ward, based on the myths of Santa, flying reindeer, and the season. I was worried about it not fitting into the contest but, screw it I'll work on it anyways. Thanks for the motivation.
Thanks god there's still a good people in this cruel world. Thank you quockhanhlk for opening my mind. You seems to be a good one, I've visited your Polycount thread, I guess you're a concept artist right? I love your concept man.
At this moment I can't think any idea for the concept that make me want to start, could you help me doing some?
p/s: Our conversation seems to be a little bit off to this thread, so it would be better if we chat in private, do you have anything such as twitter, fb that I can contact with :poly121:?
@Rehplyx: sculpting in details? Do you have a concept or more detailed blockout somewhere? In DOTA the overall concept is really important.
small concept update:
Big question is what you plan for his back As that is most interesting area in Brew as far as ingame view goes. Front view looks solid having in mind his poly limits. I would personally just remove red hat as that goes into TF2 funny items territory a little. From what I observed they dont accept funny sets recently and in general go to more realistic style. However maybe its only mine impression
@Konras: Thanks for the feedback! I romoved the hat since it doesn't look good in 3D.
This is a rough concept for the back, already started on the highpoly.
@Swaggernaut- I really like the sharpness of those legs. Looking forward to see some color
@katzeimsack- I think the concept is a little underdetailed right now, but know you'll make something great.
@mihalceanu - Speedy as always. I agree with the colors not being spot on. I was wondering if you striped the blue with a leather color if that might work better.
Fur is a tricky beast, try to define ends of the fur and how it layers, rather than the leaf shaped clumps. Clay tube buildup brush is great at laying the foundation, then do a default clay polish to cleanup and then pop onto a Orb Crack type brush to sharpen the ends of the fur pieces.
Dont forget to switch to full black to see the silhouette, I see some things you can do with the shape on the top of the head to make it more impressive. it's pretty flat and boring right now.
@katzeimsack I do most of my concepting in zbrush, I had a basic blockout but didnt want to show as it was terrible :P
@mihalceanu just a small crit of the marketing image, the way the snow is on centaur's axe and horns implies that he hasn't moved for a while, what you have on the shoulderpads makes more sense. Either way the actual set looks awesome
WIP of the CM set im working on, still have alot to fix, mostly on the cape and bracers. Still defining materials and colours as well.

It's not a bad idea, but everything is a bit too weak and insignificant. Don't try to make things realistic. Exaggerate things that are strong and hide the ones that are weak. For example: the hair is tiny, make it longer, lusher with more volume to it. The shoulders are on the other hand, gigantic blocks of iron that don't really fit the theme of a mage maiden. They need more finesse in the silhouette. The staff is not bad but way too straight and linear.
quick update on my side. I decided to go with a 2 piece set this time. I have a tail idea ready-ish but i just don`t feel it`s cutting it yet, so i`ll stick with a shoulder-hand piece.
I am working on the high sculpt right now and for the first time i want to give it a bit more love, so PLEASE if you have some advice, i will take it.
Added a bit of color just to see how it fits what i have in mind.
Love how that meepo set is shaping up Malloy, but i have to ask: does the candy cane have to have the all-too-well-known-and-used curved shape? try giving it a bit of crazyness.
Make it straight with a twist!, or make it crooked, or anything elese but please dear god don`t leave it like that!
cheers
Hi, I decided to take part in the competition. I hope my mount does not violate the rules. I'm not sure that I have time to complete it in time, but I'll try=)
@ Vayne: I think I got a good balance between looks and budget. Check the concept I posted before. The texture budget for brew is really low and I don't want the set to look horribly low in loadout.
@katzeimsack Looking sweet. Only his beard bugs me as it looks like furr. Very similar to what he has on his clothing. It is a bit confusing in my opinion. This however for sure you will fix with additional texture pass. I am holding my thumbs for this one
Got the sculpt and some polypainting done. I tried for an "Old Man Winter" kind of feel here. I originally tried for more back and front symmetry but the proportions were pretty hard to keep in check.

Here is my sculpting basemesh, not particularly exciting stuff. Time to dust off the Wacom!

Current concept WIP based on Scandinavian folklore Tomte/Nisse, feedback appreciated
Probably add a different color than brown. Since the base mesh's vest is brown, I dont think it will add that much variety
Some updates with feedback from Discord, still looking for further feedback/ideas
Finished my sculpt! Probably do all the texture work tomorrow
Still looking for feedback on how to make it cooler/more dota worthy!

Pretty happy with the texture resolution ; was expecting someting worse

Anywho, here is a half finished sculpt!
Finished the set , and its now in the workshop

Ill clean up the colors and what not tomorrow hopefully
Funny things is I was looking at one of your mounts and trying to replicate the process with limited results. I guess I should have just asked
Current blockout/WIP.
I love this design! Weapon looks too lightweight and not dangerous. But otherwise it looks nice!

minor update, still populating winter assets
More work on Meepz, bracer work. Will make right arm bracer less basic
Would love to know what you guys think
@swaggernaut: I think it's a bit to noisy right now. Maybe add a top down gradient?
finished my brewmaster highpoly,
fur might look noisy in zbrush, but looks good in dota..
I stared another set for this comp with Christian Schob.
Let's see if we can get it done on time.
This is the concept:
Day 1, finished blockout, will still change some parts, most is instances right now for faster itteration.

@hop: Maybe use some pinch to sharpen the spiky ends?
Day 3: finished highpoly
