I think you should try copying from a photo reference or real life. Do not neglect the power of references. You will have a wealth of shapes to draw and the most important is that by copying what you see, you'll be able to reproduce it later when you want to draw from imagination. Also, take your time, don't rush.
As for metallic shines, there is a couple of things about metals. They are usually very dark, but, the highlights are really high. Notice how the collection of highlights is completely opposite on the fabric and metal of gangplank's glove. Also any objects around tend to be reflected, unless said metal is very rough or painted (which are all the metals in these pics, but the chains in the foreground are rougher than the rest)
