So long awaited (at least for some of us) MonMusu (Monster Musume- Monster Girl) anime is coming next season I thought maybe a little event for the celebration/workout for anyone interested.
So I have no experience in organizing these type of things except for starting to discuss what/how should be done.
Of course main idea would be character art. It can be easily 2D/3D because of it's nature. I am not sure about environment art but if vets say it can be done, why not ?
So maybe something like the monthly quests but a little more long-run type ? Or something like forming groups to tackle bigger scenes/projects ?
So I guess all I can do left s sharing the characters' work for animated show. So looking forward your ideas
Somehow I knew it would be you before I saw your name/ava :P
I dunno man, the monthly character challenge getting some pretty good concept for June. I think I will be too busy.

Heh heh, I am happy then
Well maybe merging it for one time only with character challenge ??? Like ı said I am not sure but hey, no need to hurry for deciding
how...come an elven centaur has bigger boobs then the rest of the concept characters. Is there a theory behind it?
--SPOILER--
According to story centaur babies requires more nutrition then other ones so centaur females has more.... well ... "advanced" membranes for feeding their babies.

You can check out the manga for details about characters and why they have such physical construction.
There's probably no harm in you opening up a thread in Pimping and Previews (or whatever it is we're calling it these days), getting started on a model and putting a call out for anyone else interested to join in. That's how all the other semi-regular challenge/learning threads got going.
Seriously though I don't think there's any remote chance this will get adopted in any official way, most contests these days seem to be software sponsored and more general in subject to include as many people as possible.
You could start a challenge thread yourself but I'd suggest bracing yourself for the possibility that the thread might just get mired in argument over how sexist it is.

You mean "over-sexualized" I suppose ? Because as far as I know sexist means something quite different.
But you made a good point so let me clear that. According to manga:
--- SPOILER ---
the main character is a simple human who has no redeeming attributes and whose life is often saved by these girls. Also some f these characters are highly intelligent and most of the time lectures the main character about ways of life and how society thinks.
--- SPOILER ---
About the people not gonna join or getting the wrong impression ... well at least I tried right ?
Highly intelligent characters that look like that? Reminds me of Bender's Big Score.
Dr. Cahill (aka Dr. Good and Sexy): I am a doctor, sir. The mere fact that I am blonde and have a breathy voice, full, sensual lips, and a steaming hot body doesn't make me a bimbo.
This would be really cool, if you get this started I'd love to do either the centaur, harpy, or spider lady.. Well if i can finish my current project in time i guess.
You mean "over-sexualized" I suppose ? Because as far as I know sexist means something quite different.
I mean sexist. Not saying that is an accurate description but it is what stuff like this frequently gets labeled, whether you agree with it or not.
If you want to start your thread then go for it, I only mentioned it because without naming names here, I've seen some of the responses others have gotten here for similar types of work.
I've not seen an argument errupt here recently though and somehow polycount managed to make it through the entire gamergate fiasco without incident so I may well be wrong and my concerns unwarranted.

This was a few years back, but if you read back to past Hazardous arts thread he did get a lot of stick from people on here about the content he was producing.
I think OP will struggle on getting people to join his challenge. People good enough to do his concept are probably either working on their own project or doing a monthly character project.

@ adam : It's OK adam. As long as people have fun and make a nice workout for themselves I would feel content with it.
@ ArtisticTİger : Great to hear mate ! Check here every now and then and don't forget to write. Let's see what would come out of this.
@ AtticusMars : Wow didn't know that. Thanks mate. I am really not good with dealing with harsh conversations myself. Knowing that such kind of things happen really helps preparing myself.
@ pangaea : What ! People criticized Haz for the content of his work ? Holy .... ! Haz is one of the artists here I respect the most. I am completely speechless.
@ Odow : Yes they are part of a fetish. No denying. But please allow mt to correct that MonMusu genre started looong ago that eroge. In fact that eroge spawned as a part of that genre as collabration of Toro Toro Resistance. Also sorry for the misunderstanding, I just tried to tell it simply isn't porn. That was all.
Also yeah I will probably have trouble finding people to join it but like I said. I have no regrets, at least I tried. Also no hurries.
By the way can ı ask your opinion about one thing. The pink mermaid character you see up there. My values maybe broken so let me ask. Is there anything wrong in modelling a mermaid character like that ? I She has no abnormal physical attributes and the way she is posed there seems really elegant to me ( the tail curve and hair whirls)
To me, there's really nothing so wrong with it. Weird, maybe. But because we are not so used to these Japanese stuff.
I mean, if you watch anime and read manga, you will know that fan service is EVERYWHERE. And ecchi stuff is also very common. And harem or reverse-harem (as some call it) is also quite normal.
Meaning the only difference is that; these are half monster/animal/creature and half women. But wait, there's nothing wrong with that either.
Look at these following stuff. They are almost the same; monster girls.
So, c'mon, people. What's WRONG with it ??
And nope, there's no porn in the original source. Naked stuff, maybe. But no sex (as far as I know).
@pyrzen because your picture has nothing to do with anime monster girl, and when they look like that => https://danbooru.donmai.us/data/24b8170a843b737e2c48e956b4485623.jpg ( NSFW) It clearly only for the sexual fantasm. Musume girl is present that way, i'm not saying it's bad or good I loved the monster encyclopedia a lot myself, i'm saying what it is: over sexualized, and you can't expect people to embrace or like it the way they'll see a lamia in a game that look like that
this is pretty, she's sexy, but she's not over-sexualized in any way. and it's not made to feed a fantasm. for most people monster musume is gross, nothing more and you have no argument about it because when you forgot you like it, it's gross to see a almost naked centaur with gigantic boobs and pointy nipple and it's gross to see a cute slime girl. It's really just a matter or liking it or not, and most people doesn't like it, there's no need to go on a crusade.
Also we're in 2015 everyone knows about japan and their weird stuff as well as their amazing stuff, don't go thinking that people all love and accept monster girls in japan, it's freaking fake most people hate it it's really a niche fantasm, anime lovers have really bad reputation in japan because of those kind of anime.
Do you remember the 90's? Anime was everywhere, every book store still bears the scars in the form of a Manga section.
Wasn't really into manga back then. I'm sure I have missed out a few culture shift.
@Odow NSFW Link broken.
Now, I agree with you completely if the concepts provided are full blown erotic pieces. Ero piece is an ero piece; monster girls or not doesn't really matter.
Actually, most of those concepts provided aren't that over-sexualized. The centaur has big boobs, yeah. Not the first time around here though. I'm sure Morrigan of Darkstalker has about the same boobs. The spider-girl looks like Ivy from Soul Caliber. And I don't really like oversexualized stuff either. I think MGS' Quiet is sexualized. I think Poison from Street Fighter is sexualized. Heck, I think Starcraft Ghost's Nova is sexualized. (in the trailer, there're like 6 marines in big bulk armors, and then there's this sexy girl in battlekini Ghost armor). But, whatever... That's a derail. But I think the Lamia, Harpy, and the Slime are quite safe. If you don't go look up online of more of their stuff...
Of course; I am taking the concepts at face value. And not so much about the roots of those concepts.
There's a lot of entirely sfw and broadly appealing monster (even monstergirl/boy) concepts, and people like them just fine. Don't pretend that the entire concept is trash and can't be accepted, because people have been thinking about this shit for centuries. I mean... Mermaids. Harpies. Fawns...
But I get the idea that Odow is arguing against the specifically Anime/Manga/Game culture of "monster girl", not creatures with human bits in a broader sense.
I agree in that I feel basing it on the examples of this anime/eroge is honestly what pushes this over into "...would someone really sponsor this?" territory.
These girls were designed to be sexy, in like... a literal sense, they feel awkwardly sexual (even objectified) to people who aren't into that. It's probably not the idea of monster people that's offensive to peoples tastes here, so much as the context of monmusu. Additionally, "Monster Girls" only also pushes it further towards suggestive territory thanks to the root of the term. Even if just the title of this thread were just "Creature/Monster Contest/Challenge/Civil War" it probably would have been accepted better.
An aside, a creature/monster contest is a decent idea by itself. If it were open enough, it could easily allow people to have fun with monmusu-like designs without being, specifically, a fetish art contest that no one would sponsor. Just riffing here, but has "Modern Monsters" already been done? That would be a really cool contest/jam idea, one that I'd participate in at the drop of a hat.
I'm sorry I have a hard time differentiating between sexy and "over-sexualized". What happened to the term stylized?
I've read the manga above an yeah it's kinda borderline hentai (nudity for comedy but no sex), and yes there is a culture around that and people being fans of monster girls. But the show really is just a twist on a common formula and I kept reading cause it's honestly hilarious.
But there's no rule saying "monster girl" needs to be particularly sexy. You guys pointed out some of the more "voluptuous" characters but ignored that several of them shown are very tame. One linked to danbooru and I know you saw plenty of a non sexual or tame in nature but categorized as monster girl. For instance this which imo is pretty damn cool (knights of sidonia)...
My question is what makes this so special compared to standard pinup art made all the time? At worst it would just be "pinup + monster girl" and not porn. Is the monster part what gets people uppity? Or the sexiness? Maybe because it's a fetish of sorts?
I could see not doing something because it's weird, but it's honesty nothing new even by western standards. I think I could name a few, Beowulf, adventure time?
Not doing it because sexy would be strange cause that's always around and always optional. I mean I've seen tons of fantastic artists who have nudity in their work, and they do it cause it's fun. Monster girls exists because they're fun too.
And because it a fetish doesn't really hold up cause there's a lot of those and we already do that regularly anyway. Someone found that model of a foot you made that one time and admires and respects it for being a well modeled foot. Nothing you can do about that, shouldn't get in the way of your enjoyment.
Anyway, if i was able to find the time i'd be all for it, i think it'd be a hell of a challenge.
An aside, a creature/monster contest is a decent idea by itself. If it were open enough, it could easily allow people to have fun with monmusu-like designs without being, specifically, a fetish art contest that no one would sponsor. THAT'S IT !!!
Great idea mate. I would say nothing against that either. In fact maybe I should have thought about that from the begining.
So I guess it would be something like " Monster/Human Hybrid Challenge" ? Or what is the exact word here ? It could be male/female, ero or horror (I know some people really likes to create "stuff of nightmares ) or anything they like.
Man bloody good idea
@ PyrZern , BagelHero : Good arguements.
@ Odow : Yes I understand your points. Not everyone likes it and many people may find it crazy. That is only natural.
BUT ! Otaku has a bad name in Japan thanks to everyday media and news using "otaku is terrible" meme. Wanna deep into more ? Here and here
"Monster Girls" only also pushes it further towards suggestive territory thanks to the root of the term. Even if just the title of this thread were just "Creature/Monster Contest/Challenge/Civil War" it probably would have been accepted better.

i agree with this. it would be a lot of fun, and is way better than to solely focus on "monster girls"
BUT ! Otaku has a bad name in Japan thanks to everyday media and news using "otaku is terrible" meme.
sorry this is so out of context but it was too aberrant to let it go. (also never heard of that meme and no one i know know about it either) First Kotaku ISN'T a good source for anything that doesn't concern the release of something, most of their opinion is freaking biased and invented from what they think, not what's really going on. Go to japan, go talk with regular people and "otaku" you'll see how much bullshit kotaku can be.
Otaku is wrongly used every else on the planet, we assume it's loving anime it's not. Otaku only mean you're obsessed with something you could be a plant otaku for what i care. Just because you watch anime doesn't make you an otaku. You're an anime otaku when you waste most of your money on anime goodies, anime and manga. You mother doing a sheep collection and having like 400 of them everywhere in your home is an otaku. That's why otaku where badly look upon, because they are obsess (and most of them are also hikikomori (unemployed, no going out of their apartment, living on the states etc)
However those days, since 3/4 of the planet think otaku only mean liking anime (even casually) the term is being changed by it's wrong utilization. And what pushed even more a bad opinion about anime lover is well.. US anime lover. We're making anime an impossible place for new comers. Some of us are so extreme and think it's appropriate to share their extreme with anyone make it look bad. And what does peoples remember ?
They won't remember you telling how good shirobako anime is and that it's about the processes of doing anime, They remember stuff like you just post full of gigantic boobs, hard tits ,awkward character, etc. (then again i'm not insulting any of that i love High School DxD as much as all of you guys But i'm aware that 99% of people on earth find it gross and terrible.) That's where anime fan need to understand where it's appropriate to show stuff to people and where to refrain doing so. You won't shoot musume girls fan service on your linkedin or on your parents ipad, so why do it somewhere else, keep it for the anime forum or your anime loving friends. The thing to remember is that no matter if it is or not porn, some people will always straight said " Polycount is doing weird porn fetishes now? " Just like some people will always think that gundam was copied from transformer and just like some people will think that all magical girl are from sailor moon. And that every cute creature is a pokemon.

This here is truth as well.
No matter what we do; it also has to be ok from the eyes of the outsiders.
Though we still like to mention Penis Tank whenever we can for some reason :poly122:
@TAN You could go with Chimera-theme if you want. Ppl know Chimera means you mix a few things together. But you might get Lion + Whale instead of Dog + Girl.
mattq86: that was a pretty cool vid. it bothers me a little though, that she says its harmless in a way, that people will grow out of it. if you look at the video game industry, we havent showed any signs of growing out of it yet. we, largely 30 year old males, still make scantly clad teenage girls for other 30 year old males to look at.
You know what's a real challenge? Trying to find a cool concept that isn't a pinup model. I want to create a character like Zarya from Overwatch but it's looking like I'll have to concept her myself or commission/collaborate with a concept artist.

You should know plenty concepters, so whats stopping you from collaborating?
Thought it just means like a poster of a person. But now I presume it has some sex objectification attached to it as well...
I mean, yeah? That's some basic pop-culture. Pin-ups are "borderline" material, the focus is usually on a scandalous pose/outfit/action, but keep it classy.
We should really start another thread for the discussion like .nL mentioned.
Back to topic Chimera also seem more relevant than just "monster" . I have only one doubt though. Chimeras are artificial creatures right ? I mean they are supposed to be created by alchemy and technology etc. But lamia and mermaids are natural beings. So it should still be OK right ?
Could have the theme be combining any life forms with any other life forms. Could call it the "Monster Mash" and it could be a quite fitting pre-halloween theme.
Thought it just means like a poster of a person. But now I presume it has some sex objectification attached to it as well...
don't get too hung up on the terminology, just trying to think of a good way to summarize the kind of women you find when searching for concept art. I'm sure someone will get all puffed up about what I'm saying, make whatever art you want.
That pre-halloween theme iş damn good idea !
Hmm people really liked "Chimera" and "Monster Mash" it seems. So let's pick one and make it "free-for-all" . Basically everyone ho joins does it it's own way. From horror to anime style, anything goes ?

If it can make you feel better, as a 23years old woman, i also enjoy scantly clad teenage girl.
Anyway why do you even bother without doing a challenge ? there's already so much of them and this is the same as the character challenge Why don't you just do a post "show me your monster/hybrid/chimera/musume girl"
Wait a second, I suggested that there should be fusion fellows, for transformation and I was scoffed at. Yet chimera fellows, and the hot babes people wish they could date/be are better? I just don't get you guys.
stickadtroja
I thought I discussed this one in the beauty standards thread.
Fellows shouldn't be doing this, this is a lewd practice that is no good at all and leads to unrealistic standards.

Because the OP has a very narrow and specific interest/obsession and wants everyone else to do the same thing he likes. It's like that one kid in highschool who was obsessed with dinosaurs and no matter what subject assignment the teacher gave to the class he would still make it all about dinosaurs.

i honestly didnt understod what you meant back then. "fusion fellows"? its not exactly as clear as "monster mash". anyway maybe you could put your fusion fellows in op's monster mash thread, and everybody is happy?
on topic; i always prefered strict rules to loose for community events. for example, i felt way more tempted to join in in competitions that have a set deadline, than the more loose "art jams". would be cool though, to allow both 2d and 3d.

But I think the Lamia, Harpy, and the Slime are quite safe. If you don't go look up online of more of their stuff...
Of course; I am taking the concepts at face value. And not so much about the roots of those concepts.
Here and here
This thread is getting better and better !

Sh....... I don't..... I can't.... I can't even come close to that first model.
Now this is what I am talking about ! Thanks mate these models will really help to explain the event later.
Yep, great to see more people agree on this approach.
So the correct wording should be "Monster/ Creature" or "Humanoid" ? Is humanoid too restricting ?
sorry this is so out of context but it was too aberrant to let it go.
So what do you think about the naming ?
MY GOD. This one is GORGEOUS !!
ALSO !!

...that said I'd be way into a monster themed challenge for the pre-Halloween season.
Thought it just means like a poster of a person. But now I presume it has some sex objectification attached to it as well...
You should know plenty concepters, so whats stopping you from collaborating?
I mean, yeah? That's some basic pop-culture. Pin-ups are "borderline" material, the focus is usually on a scandalous pose/outfit/action, but keep it classy.
Back to topic Chimera also seem more relevant than just "monster" . I have only one doubt though. Chimeras are artificial creatures right ? I mean they are supposed to be created by alchemy and technology etc. But lamia and mermaids are natural beings. So it should still be OK right ?
Created, sorry for the obvious title
http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2303705#post2303705
Scientifically, a chimera is a genetic hybrid, but that's more a modern use of the term.
I'm not much of a collaborator but nothing's stopping me, I just haven't done it yet.
don't get too hung up on the terminology, just trying to think of a good way to summarize the kind of women you find when searching for concept art. I'm sure someone will get all puffed up about what I'm saying, make whatever art you want.
Hmm people really liked "Chimera" and "Monster Mash" it seems. So let's pick one and make it "free-for-all" . Basically everyone ho joins does it it's own way. From horror to anime style, anything goes ?
How does this sound ?
If it can make you feel better, as a 23years old woman, i also enjoy scantly clad teenage girl.
Anyway why do you even bother without doing a challenge ? there's already so much of them and this is the same as the character challenge Why don't you just do a post "show me your monster/hybrid/chimera/musume girl"
stickadtroja
I thought I discussed this one in the beauty standards thread.
Fellows shouldn't be doing this, this is a lewd practice that is no good at all and leads to unrealistic standards.
Meat-spiracy! Scoffed ya good.
Because the OP has a very narrow and specific interest/obsession and wants everyone else to do the same thing he likes. It's like that one kid in highschool who was obsessed with dinosaurs and no matter what subject assignment the teacher gave to the class he would still make it all about dinosaurs.
on topic; i always prefered strict rules to loose for community events. for example, i felt way more tempted to join in in competitions that have a set deadline, than the more loose "art jams". would be cool though, to allow both 2d and 3d.
