I dont mind big images, within reason of course.
I think the problem is more the filetype thing (jpeg. Always, jpeg) and often times when I see a big image posted its like 60% blank space. Composition folks. Composition.
Yeah, png/tga if you are making textures and USING them as textures, but just for showing stuff, JPG is the way to go. I have this problem with some colleages, who insist on taking screenshots as PNG and use them in the database, and trying to open a bunch of rows with 5-10 mb images in each one, is such an unbelievable pain.
I don't mind big images in individual threads; still annoying, but, worst case, I just close it and don't see their work. But when people post huge images in the WAYWO thread, it just slows everything down to a crawl, and stops me from seeing everyone else's fantastic work.
guilty, I thought in times of 4k 60fps in youtube videos and google fiber and or similar for a fast connection, games needing more than 60 GB of harddisk space, all that film and game streaming
and all that high-speed stuff that a small 1+mb file wouldn´t be a problem anymore..? o0
sad to know that the bandwidth problem still exists for some. (will try to keep that in mind next time)
more serious;
There are also webGL mesh viewers in various threads embedded which easily exceed 15+mb... per presented project/mesh - where is the ranting about that?

Those don't actually load until you press a button. Before that, it's just a preview image.
EVERYONE:
When you save an image in photoshop, use the File>Save for Web option. That compresses it the best without losing quality. It's way better than doing Save As jpeg.

Yeah, but you forgot that these times are also the ones when people browse the internet on mobile tablets over phone plans with limited bandwith and a sometimes less than stellar 3G/4G network !

Video compression only saves the differences between frames, you can bet every frame isn't anywhere near 1+ mb.
Video also plays back at a fixed rate so it doesn't really matter how large the entire file is as long as you can stream it faster than it can play it back. An image has to be viewed in its entirety (or at least most of it).
More importantly video sites usually offer different resolutions and automatically adjust if it is loading too slow. I don't get the option to just load a jpeg when I get tired of waiting for someone's 7mb PNG to load.
I uploaded PNGs in my tutorial thread because jpeg artifacts aren't very becoming for UI screenshots, and it's common for PNGs to be smaller when there are big flat areas in an image. When I save some kind of art of course it's a JPG.
well many people cant ressist the convenience of ctrl+c in photoshop and ctrl+V directly in imgur
that resulting really large image with png format....
fully agree and thanks for the additional explanations.
forgetting the mobile viewers is a huge issue.
Another reason might be the convenience of Facebooks image auto compression which might be also a reason for people forgetting to optimize their pictures.
Don't use jpg for wireframe shots, I use png with a 830 px width for most posts. I find it more annoying when people use slow or bad image hosts. Just use imgur or something better.
I usually browse Polycount on my commute to and from work on my phone, and yes, I want to internet force choke people who post a large series of 8000x4500 PNG's with no compression and marginally different angles per screenshot.
And with my other hand I will choke the ones who quote the whole damn post with a "looks nice!"
Yeah gotta chime in, regardless, seems the image has to load before the preview image. If you get a slew of 6 or 8 images in a row that have to fully load I often just navigate away from the page. Also I think myself and others are less inclined to visit external links for images or click on attachments to open them one by one.
I do the same thing as kanga, thats why I hardly ever go look at the art dumps. It gets really annoying since slow internet means that it can take 10+ minutes to even load a single post.
@Tekoppar- it depends on perspective, if you want people to point out flaws in your work, it doesn't matter. However if its presentation, then resizing the image will hide some flaws that you'd normally see if it were 2x the size.

But why would you want to hide your flaws as an artist?
Is there a way to disable quoting images or to have them replaced with a text link? There's little benefit to quoting images and a lot of cons.
Please this, Some of the wip pages are just LONG qoute pages where someone posts a few kick ass images in one and everyone qoutes it.
I dont need to see the image more than that one time, a link if i want to catch up is all thats needed.
Windows Snipping Tool, the one thats installed on every PC ? : P
Thanks but I think it's not very convenience. I really like how you can start Greenshot in different mode instantly with printscreen plus some other keys
The auto time-stamp added to the file name is also very nice. Jing also offers this functionality with an option to draw lines and add text before you save your screen.

If you dont have photonshop cant you just open the png in gimp and save out as jpg? Colour jpgs only start to loose under around 60 percent quality, 80 should give you near perfect reproduction for a web presentation.
GhostD : Greenshot has it too - you can assign different shortcuts and set one to a marquee select. Now of course there's no reason to switch back to it if Lightshot is good for your needs, but I thought I'd mention it ! Unless you mean, selecting a portion of the screen to always capture later on ? (which admittedly does sound pretty cool too)

JPG please, and crank it down to about 70% or so.
Usually 7-8 quality in the JPEG slider in Photoshop.

this whole site without clicking anything only has 742.0 kB.
but yeah without thinking a bit, the file sizes will be always pretty big..

Entry tier for fiber around here is 15mbps down/up.
But yeah, mobile is definitely still an issue.
Basically no one. It's only in three cities.

@Jed: I have no problems with PNG when people are using it for what it is good at. But it seems like people rarely are.

As monitor resolutions continues to improve, images that were considered "large" will be seen as "low res" in the future.
Yeah, but now they're way too big. You can't ignore the present in preparation for the future.
Greenshot can be set to a number of different formats, also can upload straight to imgur.
Its a good point.
How is that bad though?

Presentation: Don't show your bad, show your good.
WIP/Work that wants critique: Show whatever.

I used greenshot before but the reason why I switched was because of the selected area option (adjustable)
