Hello everyone!
My portfolio doesnt have any current 3D work so I'm starting off with a lil Tyranid guy.
Baked lowpoly update:
Here's the blockin:
And a material block in to remind me for when I start the details...
I think my next step right now is to gather reference for texture. Probably coconut crabs and cuttlefish
Tricky thing about tyranids is they have exoskeletons as well as endoskeletons, and a lot of the endoskeletal places have muscle definition so it's a bit confusing. But I love dem
The other challenge is making this more realistic than the tabletop version but staying as true to the original design as much as possible. I've been doing things like adding more ribs and extra spiracles.

Jk :P
Looking forward to this! I guess details wise, would love to see stretch marks across the ribcage.
Will you do more 40k after this one?
One thing with the hormagaunt, the forearm with the scythes should be thicker as thats where the poison glands are located if they're 'produced' to be venomous. Also the back contains adrenaline glands if they are made with them.
Like his head might be too big or his legs don't look big enough... generally since his shape follows the rough silhouette and functionality of a dinosaur... I'd say maybe try stick to their proportions... I don't think there are any dinosaurs that lean that far forward with such a heavy looking head/torso section.
Other than that it's looking good so far (Y)
I would take a look at some of the concept art or cinematic to see how GW really envisioned them.
there is a clear difference in detail from the model to the artwork. you are getting the detail mostly right but it still looks like the proportions from the models rather then the "real version"
@Lotet I see what you mean...The tyranid in the painting is a different species so it is quite different from the second image you posted. It's awesome reference though! The kind Im going for is the one in the second image you posted (minus the head spikes at the back)
I detailed the torso on the weekend...
Next weekend Ill try and get some different proportions worked out for the posing. It's definitely feeling too front heavy
take a look at this example instead then:
see the difference in proprtions at for example the hands, head and feet. the model is basically a giant head with hands n feet, holding a gun, with a body squeezed between those parts, while in the illustration he proportions are much more natueral and "realistic".
I updated the tongue. Also the teeth, using a bear skull and alligator skull for placement reference. I'm not sure how happy I am with this...they seem really spaced apart. I feel like what makes a lot of these guys so scary is the tabletop models have the teeth so tight together, like a human. I shall try again...
Shrunk the head, looks a million times better. Thanks Lotet!
Redid the teeth for a 3rd time, pretty happy with this. I might go over and sculpt them out a bit more so they look less stylized.
Reworked the face, mainly the eyes. Really wanna get that evil look
Might shrink the head further...
Keep up the good work!
Some of the earlier renders are in Marmoset
@Westfield checking it out now!
i want to steal it to pose with my bloodthirster i'm working on
really want to see more
Here's a texture test...Using coconut crabs for reference. Still need to work out a claw colour. Let me know what you think!
No update on the texture but I made a random photoshop tutorial last night haha
