Aaah soundtrack in video games. An aspect often forgotten on this forum.
What are you favorites soundtracks? What makes a music good in a game?
You know for me, music counts way more than visuals (I know, it's weird).
I often replay some old ps1/2 games because the feeling and nostalgia the soundtrack gives me is simply soothing.:D
By the way, am I the only one who prefers japanese ost's over western ones?
I don't know, americans have always been too ''ambiant'' or movie style and the japanese put much more melodies in there games and ends up being much more memorable.
Just try to imagine Shadow of the colossus or final fantasies music being composed by westerners...

Edit: Yeah I agree, more into the japanese soundtracks than ambient music like in halo, ect. Speaking of japanese soundtracks, Xenoblade for the wii had a great ost. And the new one for the wii u sounds promising:

Freespace 2, EVE Online, and the Mass Effect series all have phenomenal OST's but I've yet to come across one that's as powerful as Ace Combat's.
Morrwind's OST has got to be my favorite, and anything from Jeremy Soule.
I also have a lot of nostalgia for the crazy gothic tunes in Kagero: Deception II

Halo ambient? I never played the games and I can hum the theme song - I consider forgetable ambient tracks like the Noland Batman films, queue up dramatic arpeggio number 556.

a bunch of songs off the top of my head - love all of them. I love music in video games
I know, right? Also worth mentioning is the original Deus Ex's soundtrack, which was excellent.

Another classic is Hell March 2:

I'm also quite fond of the music in The Witcher and TW2: Assassins of Kings. Penumbra and Amnesia had pretty fitting music too.

i'd also like to mention the COD Black OPS OST, as that made the game realy stand out from all the other CODs imo
[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CERQi6uE7nY[/ame]
Higuy also has a lot of nice tracks in here.
imo a lot of games realy depend on their soundtrack and would probably feel completely different with a different ost, like for example FEZ.
but i gues its kinda hard to discuss soundtracks, since most of us are artists and not composers. so the only thing that people usually say is that they liked the soundtrack and thats it.
Hnnnnngg..!, I can play that game over and over again because of how the soundtrack both sets the scene and tells the story!
Here's my contribution to spice up the variation, bit of mark morgan.

Yup i finished Transistor recently and loved the OST too!
Also game i played recently Life is Strange is quite nice also.
My all time favs are probably the Persona Series, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Neo Tokyo, ME series and MGS aint bad too.
Nothing else goes along better when off-loading a double barrel into a demon's face.
click-clack-clock boom!
QFT--That OST was amazing.
I find myself drawn to soundtracks that have a unique "identity" that matches the game. Diablo, Thief, Thomas was Alone, Bastion, etc.
Also, here's 2 gems no one remembers that had amazing (and unique) OSTs:
Outlaws:
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL-h41b1ADQ[/ame]
(that whole game was a Leone/Morricone Love letter!)
and the ever silly Neverhood:

[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-K8R1hDG9E[/ame]
Recently Wolfenstein TNO had an amazing OST including some music used in advertising:
[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RVVHXdMmog[/ame]
[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH0nfdkYIrw[/ame]
Deus Ex had a great OST too.
The music in Kentucky Route Zero is also really good.

I see Crusader, oh man, memories. I was really bad at that game ahah, loved it regardless.
The tracks aren't something I normally listen to given the vocals and all but I love the transitions that the game plays with from instrumental to vocal bits during boss fights. The tone and pacing and overall composure fits SO well with the action, Platinum games know their action and this was a great spin off to Metal Gear.
