I have been pretty out of practice with ZBrush, and never touched polypaint before, so I decided to do a stylized ship concept that I had in the back of my mind for awhile. Right now I'm working on the rear of the ship and probably going to take the rudder into Zbrush next, but I'm thinking I might revisit the door in the first image. Would love to hear any thoughts, suggestions or critiques.

Poly painting doesn't need to be scrapped completely. You can use it to lay down base colors, bake it in Xnormal and then detail in Photoshop/3DCoat. I do props like this pretty often. It helps reduce the amount of time I have to create masks in photoshop. It's also great for blocking in large gradients and manually tweaked AOs.
