@beestonian , probably you haven't seen what people do now , they use photos with a bit a of painting and they called it concept art , what i did is called getting inspired , have you ever heard of that before
I'm loving the clean colours shapes and design. Environments that tell a story A+
Jordan, haha man, at first i thought that you were saying he outright copied with your example, but eh, what he did is fine. Especially in the sense of demonstrating emulating a style. There is no problem with it, and it's a lovely result.
Second, you have no projects. This is actually where I've fallen flat as well so I'm very aware of it in a portfolio. Make sure that your portfolio has 2 or 3 projects to show that you can work on something longer then 1 piece. You have a lot of middle eastern pieces so if you put the same foreground character in them and maybe the same logo in the bottom left hand corner or something it may tie them together.
Third, really have to work on your perspective. Beestonian mentioned earlier that you're walking a pretty tight line by using some well known photo plates under you work (and keeping the same style of painting which is really walking the line) but when I go through your pieces where you set up the shot yourself, you're chosing crazy camera angles and not using draw through. Your designs are extremely reliant on their being a photo of it existing which if you're working for someone like Creative Assembly on a total war game then you may be able to get away with that. If you're going to be making up your own designs, you'll need to really work on the fundementals.
Last, drop all the pieces that aren't relevant to the job you're applying to. If you are going for concept artist then you're going to need to lose the UI, the side scroller backgrounds and really narrow your work down to 20 pieces for right now. Feng always told us to shoot for 20 if you're doing great paintings, shoot for 30 if you're doing lots of line art. In the most recent levelUP (found [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo1SGfZEtx4[/ame]) more pros say less is more. Overall man I think you have some technically proficiency painting but now its really time to push the designs.
@greg westphal , man that is exactly what i needed , thanx for your honesty , i've started working on the design part of my portfolio , i was actually messing the whole fun , if you don't mind i'll send you my portfolio when it's done in order to receive critics from you ,
cheers and thanx again
