I'm learning UE4 now and I'm wondering how you scatter your props around the scene. Do you rotate a model and then hit End to snap it to the surface? Or is there some other, easier way? For example how did you make that pile of tapes?
Actually, I use "Simulate Phyics". Add collision to a static mesh, place it in the level (above the ground), and turn that checkbox on in it's properties. Click the Simulate button on the toolbar and it'll fall to the ground, using physics, and come to a rest. Press "K" (or right click the static mesh and tell it to keep it's physics state or whatever it's called). Stop the simulation. Voila, perfectly placed props.
To make a pile of stuff, just place a bunch in the air and they'll all simulate at once, crashing into each other and landing realistically.
I like the presentation and shading of the scene. Your trick of simulating physics to scatter the props around is pretty smart. Gonna write it down and use it later on other projects. I can see that you have fixed the geometry, now it looks smooth for real. Nice job.
Cheers!
Throne Room work resumes. I'm trying to block in the surrounding environment. I want sort of a low tech, Aliens style vibe. I've NEVER done a sci-fi environment before so ... doing a block in. This is ... interesting, so far. It's harder than I was expecting.
Hey, that picture really reflects my work with materials (albedo maps and things like that). On the important note, your work so far looks really nice. I hope you see success in your blockout.
Cheers!
Love your prop work, has a nice retro alien isolation type vibe, everything practical and useful. I guess try not to get buried in the sci-fi corridor. Good luck, keep her goin!
Judging from my experience when you are in the middle of the project it's always the darkest time when you feel unsure of yourself and everything seems wrong. I don't know but it seems that you somehow got into this period and that's where you should probably trust your instincts and push through or just loosen up.
I may be wrong though, may be it's different for you.
It's definitely good that you're back in the room though. Not sure about art deco but keep going, it's an unusual mix. I'd get rid of the greek pattern at the top.
Its funny watching the wip thread, I got a vibe from quite a few of us where we've spent a few weeks on something and we realize we have to finish it somehow. It's like the novelty of the new idea has worn off a bit and the hard work of solidifying it and refining it into something good sets in. As dzibarik said just trust your instincts and keep going to get over that hump. Grab it and smash it into something that works
First pass materials here. LOTS of props left to build ... but I like this better.
Personally I don't think you can get that mass tech feel to a bedroom, what about doing some sort of surveillance room, there would be a good opportunity since it is a utility type room, to get some interesting shapes with pipes and cables or whatever.
No, change in direction. That old throne will sit on the scrap heap for possible use in something in the future. I still LIKE that chair, it just doesn't work anymore.
Been playing with Substance Painter 1.3 - particularly the map baking. It seems to work! This will save a lot of time in the future. Wish I'd had this at the beginning.
HOOO BOY is this going to be a hard push for the finish line.
I'm off work for a few days so I'm diving into this full throttle. We'll see how far I can get with that kind of dedicated focus. I probably won't update again until I'm on the other side ...
In my childhood world, my Commodore was king and my desk was his throne room.
What I'd like from anyone who sees this is ... what's wrong with this scene? I've been staring at this for a few weeks now and while I feel it's basically done, I know that I've developed mental blinders by this point. I would LOVE fresh eyes to look at it and point out anything weird or bad looking. I need critique. Feed me!
I ask this openly and honestly. Any crit above the level of "start over" would be greatly appreciated. Love something? Hate something? Have a suggestion? Tell me!
Feel free to paint over an image if you have that kind of time or inclination...
Nice! I feel like you have taken this in the right direction. For me the first image is too dark with too much bloom and im not a fan if the diorama feel. Putting it against a corner in a room wouldn't be hard and I think it would add to it a lot. My missus also says it lacks a focal point. I suppose as a diorama the whole thing is the focal point but I think it would be good to have a hero prop that really wows. The modelling and texturing so far is solid and well done so keep it up, almost there!
I might say it looks pretty nice now. I like the detail and clutter you've made with random stuff you've put on the table. The one flaw I see, which is mostly due to my personal preference, I would make the image shaper if you catch my drift. It may be due to lighting or some post-process effect. But that aside, everything looks solid.
If I could give one crit it would be to replace the background with something dark to give a better sense of being in a dark bedroom. Or maybe you could make some simple walls and floor so the scene doesn't look too abstract? I'd say either go full abstract or full realistic, but not inbetween.
I'm following in your MODO + UE4 footsteps at home and was also eyeing Substance Painter, but I still have to master the basics of getting normal mapped static geometry properly set up in-game. How are you getting mesh collision from MODO to UE4? I'm going very slowly these days, but I'm going to get there...

Gotta start some furniture and walls and stuff soon ...
All in UE4.
What kind of texturing will you go for? Relatively new and shiny? Grungy/dirty after years of use?

I lolled at the comic strip, and added it to http://cgmemes.blogspot.co.uk/
I hope you dont mind
Also gone is this pass at an art deco vibe for the throne room. My wife pointed out that it's already too noisy and I agree.
I have another idea which I'm going to start playing with. Pray for me...

For some reason I think Die Hard
Going for a more subdued thing, more representative of childhood.
Good results, synced normals, woof!!
This looks really cool, and thanks for the "tutorial", for some reason it motivates me
Btw, what is it?
Do you find that baking process easier/better/faster than slapping a Rounded Edge shader on it in MODO, and bake it there?
As for what it is ... it's nothing. A random shape I threw together. :P
