Curve Follow Path when in Proximity?

Hey Guys, got a question regarding animating in maya.

What i'm trying to figure out in this case is how do I make a joint system with Spline IK that follows a secondary curve when entering in proximity. I recall something back in college but its way to fuzzy of an idea to put to use.

Below is an example without the snapping to get an idea of what i'm trying to get at. With that motion, the ik spline curve should snap to the other curve when its in the fall off.

Any idea of how this can be accomplished?
