cannibalizing an old unwanted piece to make a new Vi illustration. Not sure if i am breaking the rules, im sure im not though.

actually i seriously dont think it is a problem, i didnt see them saying that it has to be entirely made for the contest. i see some contestants using photos for their background etc. so i am using my own piece as a base and it is going to look totally different in the end so i think its fine.

I mean, do what you want, but it's written right there. Plus the point in doing these threads, they said it was for the artists' discipline. Likely this means they want to see your progress from nada to finished product. And posting your beginning progress as another drawing... and turning it into another, defeats the purpose.
this line that you quoted, when it say 'existing artwork' i think they meant they dont want us stealing other people/company's artwork and post it as our entry in this contest.
and this base piece that i am using, i dont treat it as an 'existing artwork', but more as a tool/aid/guide, like people using photos for their background.
and that quote 'The art work submitted to this contest must be originally made for this contest', thats what i am doing too, im making a piece originally for this contest.
you dont have to argue with me anymore too, im too lazy to debate about this. im completing this piece no matter what.
